Help connect Polmont
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Polmont’s Slow Ways.

On the edge of Kinneil Estate, you follow a well defined route past a small reservoir, along the edge of a field containing the site of a Roman fortlet, and continue past the remains of Kinneil church, the cottage where Watt did initial modifications to his steam engine, and Kinneil House....

This is a good route between Falkirk and Polmont, although with a couple of concerns at the Polmont end. The plotting in this area of the route is a bit too large scale, and obscures the important point that the route leaves the canal before Station Road. If, like me, you miss that, you'll walk another 300m before finding a sign to Polmont station and doubling back, a bit higher than the towpath. From the canal, the route follows Station Road into Polmont. I was doubling back to get to Polmont station to go home, so I walked along Marchmont Avenue, just to the West of the main road, and found it much more pleasant. This is a perfectly good route from Falkirk to Polmont....

Review of Slow Ways Route Falpol two (Falkirk to Polmont). I walked the route in reverse (i.e. from Polmont to Falkirk). The first part of the route through Polmont is simple enough, with the access point to the canal towpath clearly identified on the route map....

Review of Slow Ways Route Falpol one (Falkirk to Polmont). Once on the towpath, the going is very simple until the proposed right turn at NS90337808, intended to give access to a railway underpass....

I found it to be a very good route with great views and plenty of interest along the way. The route leaves Bo’ness town centre and crosses the railway line via a gated crossing to follow part of the foreshore (with expansive views to the north)....

We turned off the towpath to head towards Hallglen Estate on an easy footpath under the railway and over a footbridge to the road....

Although the gpx route follows the OS green diamond line, on the ground this is very difficult as it first crosses a field of bracken (passable in November, but possibly not in high summer) then crosses some fallen barriers and goes down steps to the river tunnel under the railway. I feel that I cannot fully recommend this route for all walkers, mainly because walking through the tunnel would feel dangerous for quite a few of people. It is actually a part of the John Muir Way whose website at https://johnmuirway.org/route/falkirk-linlithgow/ says “The very low, narrow tunnel under the railway south of Callendar Park is impassable other than on foot” and “Railway underpass east of Hallglen: Narrow concrete path approximately 60 cm wide, sloping cross-fall and limited height clearance through tunnel under railway....

We started at Bo'ness, passing the beautiful historic Hippodrome cinema, and then crossed the Bo'ness and Kinneil (heritage) Railway to reach the coastal path. We crossed the little railway line again and headed inland to pass Kinneil House and Estate (toilet available during opening hours apparently) which looked interesting....

Stopped at the great Granary cafe in Linlithgow for a coffee at the end. Lots of things to do/see in Linlithgow if you're interested in history....

It is a simple and direct route which mostly follows the towpath along the Union Canal (apart from an uphill section from Polmont at the start and a downhill section to Linlithgow town centre at the end)....

Review of SlowWays Route Grapol 1 (Grangemouth—Polmont). Starting in the centre of Polmont (which has shops, a pub, a train station and a bus stop to/from Falkirk and Edinburgh), the route heads down the busy Bo’ness Road....
