Help connect Linlithgow
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Linlithgow’s Slow Ways.

Having read about the steps on this route, I took a look at Pollin one to see if it offers a step-free route to the canal - it doesn't, but I think Back Station Road is the answer for step-free access. Canal towpaths seem to me to be the very epitome of Slow Ways, I really like walking them and imagining their previous life as Victorian motorways. This particular stretch of canal does the job well - it's remarkably straight (although that changes dramatically if you follow the canal beyond Winchburgh towards Edinburgh), but also remarkably quiet....

A kissing gate leads onto an earth and stone path running alongside the loch. It ends at an unpaved road which bridges the motorway. For some reason, the path goes up and over a small hill on an earth and stone footpath, but it makes better sense to keep to the tarmac path running alongside the railway....

Stopped at the great Granary cafe in Linlithgow for a coffee at the end. Lots of things to do/see in Linlithgow if you're interested in history....

I walked this route in reverse (i.e. Winchburgh to Linlithgow) in March 2023....

It is a simple and direct route which mostly follows the towpath along the Union Canal (apart from an uphill section from Polmont at the start and a downhill section to Linlithgow town centre at the end)....

The route through the woods is on woodland tracks and as stated by other reviewer there is no easy way out of the woods at the Hopetoun Garden Centre. I climbed a wall and through some undergrowth to get out onto road. Then walk after this is good, up a quite road and then along the canal to Linlithgow....

Worth stopping at the Park Bistro just after the narrowboat farm for some food & drinks before marching onwards to Linlithgow....

Not the shortest possible route, but a pleasant walk on minor back roads with good surfaces....
Mairi
Access past Hopetoun garden centre (into Hopetoun wood) not normally possible due to a locked gate, with no alternatives , so would not recommend planning to do this route. A few muddy sections in the woods, but otherwise mostly good surfaces....
Mairi
Off road, level, tarmaced surface - good for walking, running or cycling....
Mairi
Good route along the canal with good surfaces all the way. No road sections....
