Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walked in reverse.

The Linlithgow end is served well by transport links and shops, and the route soon takes us out of the urban area and into the countryside. A kissing gate leads onto an earth and stone path running alongside the loch. It ends at an unpaved road which bridges the motorway. Whilst unpaved, it appears to be quite quiet, leading only to a farm and some cottages.

We're not on it long before we join a farmtrack that gradually climbs Airngarth Hill. It is mostly tarmacced, until we hit tree cover and becomes an earthern track. Once past the houses, the track joins another unpaved road, but with verges.

Once over the crossroads, another quiet unpaved road. After a while, a junction onto another, now part of the John Muir Way. At the end of the road, a footpath that leads through the woods. Eventually, it ends at Kinneil House, where we follow the long tarmac path into Bo'ness.

Along a couple of roads and footpaths, before we cross the heritage railway. For some reason, the path goes up and over a small hill on an earth and stone footpath, but it makes better sense to keep to the tarmac path running alongside the railway.

It's a very pleasant walk alongside the Firth of Forth. Into Bo'ness, we cross the railway by means of a level crossing, and the route ends (or starts) at a small square near the local bus stops and shops.

A good route, but the rough terrain in the woods excludes wheelchair users. Although there is some unpaved road walking, I witnessed very little traffic, and they should be safe to walk.

Not the shortest possible route, but a pleasant walk on minor back roads with good surfaces.
