Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Oswestry’s Slow Ways.

A variety of path types: fields, pavements, a short stretch of towpath and lanes which echo with birdsong....

Particularly enjoyed the approach to Grug Hill from Eardiston over common heath land which felt rugged and wild. Lovely village too....

Tricky to navigate around the canal due to building works - would definitely recommend following the canal tow path further as suggested in previous reviews. Oswestry Fort is an impressive structure with good views from the top - worth a detour....

From Oswestry the route follows the Wat’s Dyke Way, this is well signposted apart from around the A483 crossing; here we mistakenly took a path under the road which led along the boundary of a sewage works and sparked a heated discussion about the state of our nation’s sewage system and an unofficial inspection of the River Perry around the overflow pipes! A bit of careful navigating is needed here to stay on the Way - but even if, like us, you find yourself on the alternative sewage route, don’t fear - this path runs along the river, parallel to the WDW, and brings you out on the lane just before Ball to join the main route again....

We missed the path which runs down the A483 and crosses it, instead taking a footpath under the A483 on the east side of and along the river Morda. It was boggy and a bit grim but was insightful as you could see how easily sewage water gets into the river Morda. So much plastic rubbish in and around that river on the outskirts of Oswestry. We emerged from the sewage works footpath at Pentre Coed Farm on Maesbury Rd, which was scenic. We took Wat's Dyke footpath along the river to join back up with the Oswbas route just before the junction with Ball Lane, where there's an interesting derelict chapel. Over a stile on Mill Lane and a footbridge over the River Perry. Keep parallel with the river, even though there's no public footpath sign in the lower meadow....

An interesting walk to Oswestry, crossing the border into England at Chirk Bridge and taking in the old Oswestry Hill Fort outside the town- but some major road crossings and path diversions need careful navigating and possible re-routes. In any case, a more pleasant solution might be to re-route this section, crossing the Rhosweil Bridge and following the towpath on the far side of the canal. In view of this hazardous crossing, it may be preferable to keep to the established Watt’s Dyke route through Gobowen, this means more road walking, however, you’d be following a B road on pavement and would cross the A5 via a bridge....

Looked at Chiosw Route Two, along the Llangollen Canal, and this is preferable from Rhoswiel to Gobowen. Nice to get onto Wat's Dyke - cos the waymarkers were reassuring and nice pastureland with old farm buildings with bags of historical interest....

Lots of historical sites on route including Old Oswestry and the start of Pontcysyllte UNESCO World Heritage Site around Chirk aqueduct. Many may prefer to follow the canal around Chirk with this adding no extra time but taking in a bit more scenery. Very good transport connections....

Some may prefer to go along the length of the Montgomery Canal to Llanymynech for ease of route. Section between Llanymynech and Oswestry had clear paths but a few broken stiles....

The paths leaving Llanfyllin pass uphill through some lovely countryside with reasonably easy walking up to Ty Canol at SJ 1754 2100 where the path is indistinct on the ground and required a diversion to a field gate South of the path that took me through a field with a bull. At SJ 1806 2130, the Slow Ways route turns left on exiting the wood but a double gate crosses the track with a ‘Private, No Entry’ sign. To avoid the above issues, I would suggest leaving the Slow Ways route at SJ 1732 2086 and follow that path to Llanfechain....

The route follows identifiable paths so is easy to navigate. The paths occasionally have a width reduced to about 600mm....
