Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

20 Jun 2021 Spring

This route was walked on 17/06/2021.
The paths leaving Llanfyllin pass uphill through some lovely countryside with reasonably easy walking up to Ty Canol at SJ 1754 2100 where the path is indistinct on the ground and required a diversion to a field gate South of the path that took me through a field with a bull. I regained the path on the East side of Ty Canol that runs to the road at SJ 1790 2111 where the path should continue straight on into the field. No access is available through the hedge but a gate to the field is a few yards to the North. The path drops very steeply (from OS height data 490ft ASL to 415ft ASL) then passes through a wood. No path is visible on the ground and no clear access to the wood is available. The path through the wood is steep and not evident on the ground. At SJ 1806 2130, the Slow Ways route turns left on exiting the wood but a double gate crosses the track with a ‘Private, No Entry’ sign. This necessitated walking to Llanfechain and taking the paths starting at SJ 1875 2068. I took the Westerly path and re-joined the route at SJ 1827 2151.
To avoid the above issues, I would suggest leaving the Slow Ways route at SJ 1732 2086 and follow that path to Llanfechain.
From this point on the path was easy to follow and walk. There is a half mile stretch form Pen-y-Bont that passes on a busy road with no pedestrian walkway.
At Trefonen the route passes by a shop that is convenient for purchasing refreshments.
The route diversion results in a total distance close to 15 miles rather than the 12.5 miles of the Slow Ways route.
