Help connect Ellesmere
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Ellesmere’s Slow Ways.

At Bettisfield, the route should go from the canal bridge at Bettisfield, along the road to the old railway line, and then take the route up to Fenns Moss. From here it heads back to the canal and on to Whitchurch.....

Unfortunately the condition of the central section of this walk was inaccessible which meant that we were unable to complete the route....

A fine, level walk most of which is along the towpath of the Llangollen canal (one short tunnel length). The section through the Fenns, Whixal, Bettisfield National Nature reserve is also of interest with a unique atmosphere. Note that care is required to ensure that the correct line between the old railway track across the field to the canal is taken (PROW is waymarked)....

A safe, direct, relaxing walk along the popular and very friendly Llangollen Canal....

There' was a bit of a scramble on the steep path out of Wales down the hill from Chirk but this was soon forgotten as I crossed the Ceiriog into England and followed the lane up to the towpath of the Llangollen Canal. On the other side I followed the path until it seemed to disappear. So I headed on and about 20m from the exit of the woods, the path became seemingly impassable and worked my way around it. This route certainly ticks the direct and safe boxes but I can't help thinking that if you used more of the canal and joined this route further east, bypassing Wat's Dyke it could be a 4 or maybe 5 star walk....

Walk this routeThis was actually possible and I was able to follow for a hundred metres or so until it reaches a totally overgrown section....

The section into Dudleston Heath means that you must then walk on a road section with no footway. It's a pretty dodgy road section. Much better would be to carry on to Greenhill Bank via the much quieter lanes....

This route follows the Llangollen canal and part of the former Whitchurch to Oswestry railway between the rural market towns of Ellesmere and Whitchurch. At the first canal bridge east of Bettisfield, the route takes a footpath across a field to join a track along the old railway line. This is an easy route to follow with no access difficulties encountered and very little noticeable change in level along the whole route which is almost entirely on canal towpaths or wide tracks along the old railway line....

The route indicates a path to the right but this is not clearly visible, so I continued further down the lane and turned right to rejoin the route into Wales. The route turns immediately right away from the village along Striga Land, and after a short distance, cross a stile to the left across fields. This path crosses fields turning ninety degrees right and crosses directly over New Hall Lane. I followed the route to rejoin the A495 as marked; however, about halfway between New Hall Lane and A495, a path is indicated heading north east which might be a more direct route to the A525, which seemed less trafficked than the A495 and had a footpath. Another fairly long stretch of walking along this busy road until I turned right down a track heading for the Llangollen canal where the path crosses over a bridge and rises up across fields to the dairy processing buildings at Belton Farm Ltd....

The canal towpath from Lion Quays to Moors Lane, St Martin's is cloesd for the rest of 2021....
