Latest Updates

The only improvement I would add to this route is to take the path through the Woodlands parallel with Ross Road in Abergavenny (Photo 5), as there are no pavements on the top part of the road, so this alternative is safer and much nicer. If your timing is right, there is the Skirrid Inn at Llanvihangel Crucorney (which has a claim on being the oldest pub in Wales) and the Hunter`s Moon in Llangattock Lingoed. The fields leading to Llangattock Lingoed were an absolute bog in places, so a good pair of boots is needed for this one. The route crosses the cattle grid and turns left up the farm drive and through the farmyard, beyond which it descends to cross a footbridge over the headwaters of the River Trothy, a tributary of the Wye that eventually joins the latter just downstream of Monmouth. The footpath traces the base of a spur that points towards Kentchurch; rounding the tip of the spur the route follows a delightful, quiet section of the Monnow, along its right bank. The next section of the route is across a mile of intensively farmed arable fields before emerging onto tarmac at Monmouth Cap and turning right to the England/Wales border at Llangua Bridge (photo 10, looking back along the route). Beyond the footbridge the route crosses fields and meets the main road again, turning left along it and past the village's two pubs to finish at the Post office and shop (photo 13)....

This route as plotted by a volunteer was pioneered by Nic Howes on 14.7.2024 and was found to be impassable without minor tweaks to the route details. The main problem was obstructions to Monmouthshire PROW 359/155/1, which have been reported to Monmouthshire Council on their interactive PROW map. There is a simple route deviation to avoid the obstructions and it does not add extra distance....

Delightful walk, ending next to a stunning church....

The more workaday parts of the route at the Abergavenny end are efficient and easy to navigate and I forgave it a couple of bad gate-ties, some cattle-poached ground and a potentially mucky farmyard (fine today though) at Tump. Access good generally and the area is well-walked, though at Tump, the way through the farmyard deviates very minorly from the mapped footpath....

Walk this route

Agree the most direct walking route available between Abergavenny and Llangattock Lingoed, on well waymarked (mostly) rights of way. The gate on leaving Llanddewi Skirrid is not waymarked, and the gate out of Tump Farm is held with binder twine which took a while to re-tie, but no issues to speak of. A pleasure to walk this route, especially if the Hunter's Moon (next to St Cadoc's Church) is open on your arrival at Llangattock Lingoed....
