After the footbridge at grid reference 687186 the route becomes difficult: slippy sections close the river’s edge, steps, stepping stones, sloping rock, fallen branches, swamp and muddy-rubbly sections, until the route emerges from the woods above Jeremy Gill (see Photos 1-5 for examples). In Great Ormside go briefly left then right on the road beyond the house, opposite the Post Box (see Photo 6)2 Follow the track between field entrances at 734135 (Photo 12) then follow it left into an enclosed pathway at 735136 (Photo 13)4 As a result, when entering the last field before the road, head half left to find the stile and footbridge....

The path could be overgrown in sections in summer and so was harder to follow...

The trail is pretty good but at times is hard to spot but it is fairly straightforward....

Lots of ups and downs and finished with a long road walk but really beautiful! The trail was slightly boggy and hard to navigate at times....

A nice walk through farm land some stomping through meadows where the path disappears slightly but overall a very gentle farmland stomp...

lots of hills on this route over the moors which were difficult to navigate at points. good stomp though slightly tiresome....

We did the route from Keld to Kirkby Stephen so there was a steep descent at the end along a long twisting road, which can be hard on the feet if in hiking boots. The path became difficult to navigate at points but overall a stunning walk...

Slow Ways Connections added Appkir two, a new walk from Appleby-in-Westmorland to Kirkby Stephen
Walk this routeTurn left at the top and follow the road. At a waymarked right turn, take the track - when it bends left, go right through a gate, traversing the slope down to a ruined farm building. Turn right (then ignore Popping Lane on the right) and just before a house take a track on the left. Beyond the gate, follow the hedge on the right, go over a stile by a gate and then follow the hedge on the left. Take the road down into the village centre, go to the left of the green, past the Bay Horse (or stop!) and follow the road out. After the farm take a right through a wall gate, cross the field and emerge onto a farm track - head right briefly along it before going left through the wall back into fields. Just after a gazebo and a shed right by the track, cross the last wall and then swing left down the field, joining a paved section, towards the left edge of a stand of trees....

I set out to walk AppKir One - from Appleby to Kirkby Stephen - as described on the Slow Ways route map. Critically this differs in one respect from the route as walked and described in Stephen Walker’s review – it doesn’t follow the “A Pennine Journey” route from Appleby to Great Ormside, instead following a RoW roughly parallel and north east of the river over pastures, gradually dropping to meet the river opposite Ormside Hall. Certainly Slow Ways AppKir One, at least for some of the year, is not a viable route, because of this river crossing....

After a mile and half to route leaves the road to follow an enclosed lane into Soulby. This section of footpath heading towards Little Musgrave was very wet and muddy on the day I walked. After crossing the lane west of Little Musgrave the path continues across [wet, muddy] fields to Ploughlands. After passing the end of Warcop Old Bridge the route continues on a surface lane alongside the river. At Blacksyke Bridge the route takes a right/left chicane to approach the farm, and then a waymarked lane climbs parallel with the river around Trickle Banks wood. After the threading through the riverside meadows the route joins a lane and climbs to join the road....

Hugh Hudson added Kirbro two, a new walk from Kirkby Stephen to Brough (Cumbria)
Walk this routeAfter Winton the route follows a derelict and difficult path to an unopenable gate at a fly-tipping area by the main road, and subsequently requries extensive walking along the verges of the A685 - the verges are rough, the road is busy and cars travel at up to 60mph. Instead use the route of "A Pennine Journey" - marked on OS maps - to the outskirts of Brough and then follow the track/road down into the village centre. I would suggest this officially but don't have the means of producing a GPX file....

The more traditional way from Kirkby Stephen to Keld is via the Coast to Coast route which goes up and over the moors via Nine Standards ....
