After passing through an underpass under a busy road it joins a quiet and pleasant cyclepath (NCN Route 7/73) through farmland and open countryside....

After passing beneath the A78 the route followed an obvious former railway line of some kind, and was separated from the (at the time) quiet B779 road, although lots of cyclists didn't seem to realise that this was a separate cycle track from the road. After walking beneath the A737 I'm not sure why there was a detour around the field when you could have stayed alongside the river, however the route into Irvine was pretty straightforward....

At the first roundabout from Stevenston, I was able to move away from the main road a little as the housing is set back. The Ayrshire Coast Path Road, ie Dubbs Road, was much quieter although there were still the odd vehicles. I later discovered this was because the road is closed to motorised vehicles underneath the railway bridge....

Fortunately, I found the route easy to follow with no significant challenges except for the need to take care when walking along the winding sections of the country road which it mainly follows. After crossing the Dalry bypass, the route follows country roads bordered by woodland and farmland. All in all, a mostly well-mapped and easy to complete route with its main limitations being the long pavement-less sections of roadway (cyclists will be fine – many passed me on the day) and the muddy section near the end (but with an easy alternative)....

The majority of the route is wheelchair accessible, apart from a short stretch at the start of the route in Kilwinning, where the route moves away from the route of National Cycle Network Route 7....
