Help connect Brechin
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Brechin’s Slow Ways.

I did this route in reverse (from Brechin to Auchronie), and it's a lovely way to do it: you begin in the town of Brechin and walk out on a main country road that dwindles to a single track up to the Iron Age Catherthuns forts and suddenly Glen Lethnot and the Angus Glens are laid out before you. It's a steady road walk winding up pretty Glen Lethnot to Stoneyford where in theory I should have been able to turn onto a path up the Clash of Wirren....

I walked this way in May 2022. At grid ref. NO 6781 6047 the route is impassable. It’s supposed to go across a bridge but the way is blocked by metal barriers. I carried on along the field margin, negotiating a tricky ditch crossing) to emerge (backwards through a hole in a hedge) on to the lane at. NO 6840 6061 and was able to rejoin the route Altogether, not ideal, particularly for anyone with mobility problems....

From here the path climbs up the right hand side of Loch Brandy, this is a less well made path climbing steeply up through boulders, large stones and muddy patches. At the top you turn right onto a path over rough level ground to a deer fence. I carried along beside this fence right up to The Goet, this is gently undulating uphill, there isn't really a path, just peat hags alternating with rough grass, with some bog and a couple of lochans. Back at the fence line there is a small stile, cross here and you will see your path below to the right snaking down Black Shank. There was no break in the fence line or clear path and to get across the field steeply down to the marked bridge I would have had to cross a field with lambs and ground nesting birds in, so I continued on the road instead, which snakes alongside the Water of Saughs through the Glenlethnot estate to Bridgend and then Burnfoot. I took the road right down to Kirkton of Menmuir and turned right there as again there were livestock in the field and no clear path where the SlowWays route tracks....
