Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

13 Nov 2022Full disclosure I did the first part from Whickham to Dunston, (the junction of Wellington Road and St Omers Road) the previous day as it shares the route with Whigat one and Whinew one.
The route starts on the main street and then heads downhill behind shops and hotels. There is an attractive graveyard if you like that sort of thing. There are good views across the valley at times. You then head down a fairly steep hill towards the River.
When you get to the bottom you then have a somewhat uninspiring walk through the town of Dunston until you get to the river.
The river bank walk is wonderful and has the added advantage of a great cafe on the way. Once you get over the swing bridge a steep series of steps faces you which was the only drawback of this route. The quayside itself was busy with the Sunday MArket and food stalls.
The steps up take you through an attractive medieval gate which I hadn't seen before.
