Help connect Newcastle
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Newcastle’s Slow Ways.

I'd just followed Newgat Four from Newcastle to Gateshead via the High Level Bridge, then I turned on my heel to walk back across the river on the Swing Bridge....

I don't know how many times I've passed through Newcastle on the train and never had the time to cross some of the bridges over the river....

Stopped of for packed lunch in Iris Brickfield park, and really enjoyed the little section past the golf course in Wallsend - looks like the golf course in the process of becoming housing, hopefully all the building wont effect the route....

A good route from Blaydon into the centre of Newcastle, with a mix of green and urban spaces. Crossing the river and picking up the Hadrian’s Way footpath was a bit fiddly. If you’re walking across the bridge on the right hand side then you’ll more easily pick up the green footbridge or pedestrian subway that links you with the Hadrian’s Way path. Once on the Hadrian’s Way footpath it’s a gentle and straightforward walk up this green corridor....

After a few roads, and cutting through the small Shieldfield Green, we pass through an estate, under the blocks of flats above to steps or a slope down to the road. Taking a junction to take us past the Star And Shadow Cinema, after a couple of roads, we take a tarmac footpath downhill into the heavily wooded Ouseburn Park. Next are a couple of residential roads, followed by Iris Brickfield Park; more paved roads, including under a railway bridge....

Accessed by ramp or steps, from here until Newcastle it's a great tarmac path. With only a few road crossings, and the odd bridge, it's a straightforward walk....

So, I’ll just add the comment that plotted without the wiggles it’s about 0.85m/1.3k and almost level except the slope to Gateshead metro/bus station....

I also walked this route with the Wild Intrigue group who are impressively and inspiringly knowledgable about the wildlife, nature and history of this area. This added a lot to the walk giving a very heightened awareness of what we were seeing around us, but aside from that it would be a great walk anyway, pretty unstrenuous with a lot to see. Also, the Italian bistro Liosi's on the route looks worth going back for!...

I then headed through a small park and some housing (with avoidable steps) into City Stadium Park and out opposite the Star and Shadow Cinema. Very soon I walked through Jesmond Vale along the Ouse Burn, and then on through Heaton Park/Armstrong Park which was full of families, out on a pleasant Sunday morning....

If you fancy a lively, delicious, multicultural mix of ancient and recent history, spicy and sweet restaurants and shops, dilapidated grandeur, biker shops, and science museums, this is the walk for you! We walked from Denton Burn into Newcastle, and I loved it!...

The route initially heads down towards the River Tyne from Newcastle Central Station, before following the north side of the River Tyne west. It has a wealth of wildlife on the Tyne Estuary, from the World's Most Inland Black-legged Kittiwake colony, to Peregrine Falcon, Shelduck and other wading species (recommend going at low tide for best wildlife encounters)....
Cain Scrimgeour
For the majority of the year the most you would encounter while crossing the Town Moor would be fellow walkers and runners. As you come out of the Town Moor you have to cross a very busy main road to get into Dukes Moor. There isn’t a pedestrian crossing directly on the route....
Tanya
There is so much wildlife to see along the river estuary - shelducks, kittiwakes, whitethroat, goldfinch….. Even the short stretch on Scotswood Road, which is busy with fast traffic, has butterflies and brambles....

If walking Newcastle - Whickham like we did, don't forget to turn around to enjoy the views at the Whickham end when climbing the hills....
Dan Barron
Straight forward, direct route. Nice views across the river. Enjoyed the bridge graffiti too....

Walked Newcastle to Brunton Bridge. Start by climbing past the old town walls, then St James’ Park stadium. Leazes Park is the first of 3 town cow pastures: here is a small inquisitive herd. After crossing the A167 on a footbridge I came to Town Moor - what an expanse of green meadow, skylarks in full chorus, and all still in sight of the stands at St James’ Park....
Jane Taylor
It is fun walking across the high level bridge - great views of the river and other bridges!...
Lucy S
There were some less nice bits on pavements beside roads and a very narrow pavement under a bridge (unfortunately this is the only photo I took!)....

Slow Ways Welcome Team added Brunew two, a new walk from Brunton Bridge to Newcastle
Walk this routeThis is close to perfect but needs a couple of tweaks at St James’ Park and Nun’s Moor to sort out a couple of access/misdirection things. I’ll put up Brunew Two with corrections asap. Really good route though....
Jane Taylor
Newcastle Central Station itself is quite an impressive building....
Louise Laws
I agree that this is a totally straightforward, step free and direct paved route. It's pleasant enough and gives some varied urban environments in a short distance. Good shops, cafes and transport at either end....
Andrew Davies
However, it has two steep sections - the Tyne Bridge down to the Swing Bridge and the section from the Quayside up Forth Banks....
Andy Redfern
The strongest reason is that it is the closest route to being level as the High Level bridge allows you to cross the Tyne 30metres above river....
Andy Redfern
A great way to cross the Tyne on a historic bridge and allowing you to enjoy the Riverside on either bank....
Andrew Davies
Lovely time of year to walk through the parks but following weeks of rain there were quite a lot of muddy parts and some of the paths were quite slippy. Ouseburn valley area always a pleasure to walk through especially by Ouseburn Farm....
Martin Newcastle
At this time of year, Jesmond Dene feels like a rain forest with mature trees and lots of birdlife. Once you are in the Dene, it is nice and flat, but those with accessibility needs might want to take an alternative route down the lovely Jesmond Park West and enter the Dene/Armstrong Park from Armstrong Bridge where it is not as steep....
Lee Newcastle
The route follows the banks of the River Tyne only leaving the river to skirt industrial units....

Philip Le Marquand added Blanew two, a new walk from Blaydon to Newcastle
Walk this routeThere are no cycle paths on the Newcastle side, but good crossings and cycle paths on Gatehead side. Some very steep sections. Beautiful view of the bridges and river....
Lucy S
There were a few poor crossings - from Exhibition park to Queen Victoria Road and some side road crossings on Gosforth High Street....
Lucy S
A short walk beside the hospital brings you to a path besides a playing field before descending along tarmacked paths down into the Dene. As you walk down stream beside the river there are a number of alternative paths available. Ouseburn has seen a lot of development over the past few years and this was a pleasant walk beside the river with a mixture of old and new buildings....
Philip Le Marquand
Philip Le Marquand added Newclon two, a new walk from Newcastle to Longbenton
Walk this routeThe route goes along a main road from Longbenton which was a busy road with some poor quality pavement and substandard crossings....
Lucy S
This is an acceptable route taking in part of the Quayside and Ouseburn and Jemond Dene. A short stretch along the riverbank then head up towards the end of Jesmond Dene and the banks of the Ouse Burn....
Philip Le Marquand
This is a fully accessible route through suburban streets, at the edge of parkland and then through the city centre. Easy walking....
Philip Le Marquand
Interesting walk following the Tyne from the Quayside (where there's a market on Sundays) to St Peter's Basin (check out the sunken boat at the east end of the basin at low tide)....
Barbara Scott-Emmett
There are some fast-moving roads to cross once you near the Reudgheuh Bridge but these can be avoided by walking underneath the bridge....
Stewart Thom
As the route continues through Jesmond Dene, it was very muddy on the day I covered it, to the point where I was concerned about losing my footing on the soft mud at times....
Richard Borrowdale
This is certainly one of the most accessible and shortest routes from Gosforth to Newcastle city centre. On safe wide pavements along the nevertheless busy Great North Road. I would personally go through Jesmond or the Town Moor for a more scenic route but much less accessible as per the OPs notes....
Swiss Danny
Once the other side there is a series of steps going down then a shorter section going up to the Cathedral....
Philip Le Marquand
It is a nice route as mentioned before only on foot though there are other routes including Newgat three and Newgat four which are more accessible....
Philip Le Marquand
This is a good route if you want to avoid steps and still want to cross the river via the quayside and swing bridge. It does what it says on the tin....
Philip Le Marquand
The view when crossing the bridge is arguably more impressive if you use the downstream side of the bridge - you look towards the Tyne Bridge, Swing Bridge, and Millennium Bridge plus the Iconic Sage Music Venue....
Philip Le Marquand
Full disclosure I did the first part from Whickham to Dunston, (the junction of Wellington Road and St Omers Road) the previous day as it shares the route with Whigat one and Whinew two. You then cross a new housing development to road and follow road crossing the River Team....
Philip Le Marquand
Full disclosure I did the first part from Whickham to Dunston, (the junction of Wellington Road and St Omers Road) the previous day as it shares the route with Whigat one and Whinew one. When you get to the bottom you then have a somewhat uninspiring walk through the town of Dunston until you get to the river....
Philip Le Marquand
Philip Le Marquand added Newgat four, a new walk from Newcastle to Gateshead
Walk this routeThis is a good route for those (like me) who are walking along the actual line of Hadrian's Wall. There are some visible remains on this route....
Philip Le Marquand
I walked this route from Wallsend to Newcastle....
Philip Le Marquand
A very pleasant route with varied surroundings which takes you from central Gosforth to Newcastle city centre by Central Station, or vice versa, being largely the natural fastest walking route between the two except for crossing some Moors instead of going straight down the main and busy 'Great North Road' but still managing to stay impressively close to a direct 'as the crow flies' route, as can be seen from the route on the map....
Sadie Bartholomew
A very accessible route that, precisely as the route submitter's overview states, is "not quite as pleasant as walking across the Town Moor and through the park", i.e. the 'Gosnew one' route, but is (paraphrasing) easier due to less crossings of the busy roads and more accessible due to always having paths rather than unpaved areas e.g....
Sadie Bartholomew
First, around the cathedral, there are lots of stairs, and then the alleyway taking you to Central Station is gated and locked at both ends....
Hiking Historian
There are a lot of steps down to the river to cross the Swing Bridge from the castle, however, but it's otherwise a decent walk....
Hiking Historian
The approach to the river is sloped, but with ramps at all appropriate road crossings. The promenade is well-paved with great views of all the bridges....

Hiking Historian added Newgat three, a new walk from Newcastle to Gateshead
Walk this routeAn urban route between a city and suburb with great transport and shopping throughout. All paved, with ramps at crossings. Uphill climb from Denton Burn may cause some wheelchair or bike strain, but easily done....
Hiking Historian
Not the most beautiful route, but interesting, easily walkable, mostly flat, & some good views of the Tyne. Some parts run through warehouse areas, or don't have good lighting - it isn't necessarily one I'd walk alone or at night. Some stairs....
Laura
Northern mum added Gosnew two, a new walk from Gosforth to Newcastle
Walk this routeI would recommend Newgat Two if you can handle all its steps as it is quieter (and you get a better view of the bridge)....
Slow Ways Darren
The swing bridge is actually quite a quiet route across the Tyne and provides great views of the iconic Tyne Bridge....

Marion Frankland added Newgat two, a new walk from Newcastle to Gateshead
Walk this routeDid not feel safe the first part of this route, as it goes over one of the busy road bridges. Although you have a barrier between you and the road, you are sharing a narrow space with cyclists. Once down beside the river, and onwards it was a pleasant enough walk....
Marion Frankland
Marion Frankland added Whinew two, a new walk from Whickham to Newcastle
Walk this routeTries to take you down a gated alleyway, then walks across the busiest bridge for traffic. A further issue with routing one over the bridge. Some steps as well....
