Description
This route is loosely the same as WelRus one, but takes account of the lack of useable paths between Irthlingborough Road and the Nene in Wellingborough, and also uses the Greenway path to provide a better approach to Rushden. I have test walked all of it except the section of pavement walk along The Embankment. The footpath along the Nene is mostly unsurfaced and mostly grassy, with raised footbridges that have steps. This route uses steps to access the footbridge over the A45 but there are also longer ramps

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Apr 2024Walked from Wellingborough to Rushden, apart from the section along The Embankment, which I added because the route that I found along the old railway may not actually be a right of way, and all of the other exits south from Irthlingborough Road are well defended by fences and gravel pits. Most of this walk is very enjoyable.
From the Wellingborough meeting point, we cross the churchyard and pass between shops to reach Midland Road. We follow it out until Brook Street East offers a route into Castle Fields. We cross Irthlingborough Road and turn right down the Embankment (cross with care as it is quite busy at times). This is probably the easiest way to reach the Nene Way riverside path, which starts surfaced, but before long becomes a well trodden path through grass, with a few raised bridges accessed by steps. We follow the river under the railway viaduct and most of the way to Ditchford Lane.
This route uses a track to reach the busy road - there should be a right of way through the field and the Nene Way points that way, but the gate into it was securely tied with barbed wire so I decided against trying to use it. Unfortunately this does mean a short section of road walking to regain the path, which passes the sewage works and crosses above a weir that is only used at high water to reach the main cycle track through the Rushden Lakes country park. The track emerges in a cluster of shop car parks, and we have to find our way through them to reach the high footbridge over the A45, which can be accessed by staircases or much longer ramps on both sides.
From here we follow the cycle track signs to reach the Greenway railway path, which takes us to the north end of Rushden's High Street. A simple pavement walk takes us to the Rushden meeting point, which is rather oddly situated on the south side of a junction where there is a good bench and a wider pavement on the north side.
