Sections of head-high nettles overgrowing the path in the section between Ditchford Lane and Rushden Lakes....

The majority of the route is pleasant but the section from the Irthlingborough road to River Nene is not passable without wading or swimming across the River Ise (shown in photo). A path is present to the south joining Irthlingborough road just west of the bend but it goes around tall metal fencing and unclear if it is intended as a right of way (to right of fencing in photo)....

Unfortunately this does mean a short section of road walking to regain the path, which passes the sewage works and crosses above a weir that is only used at high water to reach the main cycle track through the Rushden Lakes country park. From here we follow the cycle track signs to reach the Greenway railway path, which takes us to the north end of Rushden's High Street....

Walk this routeI walked some of this route from Wellingborough to Rushden, and investigated all of the possible paths south from Irthlingborough Road. The only one that is walkable is the old railway, and even that is unsignposted and probably not a right of way. A shame because most of the route is good....

This should be a good route, but it involves several large fields with no cut path, and the path down from Great Harrowden is currently obstructed by housing development - I managed to climb a locked gate to get down to the busy A509 but would not recommend walking on it or crossing where the footpath ends. Immediately beyond the bridge we take the footpath that starts down steps to the left and follows the A14 and skirts the travelodge before heading left across the field on a well marked path. Beyond the road we cross another large field downhill with no clear marked path - here I drifted too far left but once the wood below was visible this was easily corrected. In retrospect, had I known about the large housing development in the field below, I would have followed Orlingbury Road to the A509 junction and used the cycle track to reach Wellingborough Road, and a local might like to check this out and submit it as an alternative route....

A better - quieter, shorter and safer - start to this walk would be to use the Greenway that connects Rushden High Street with Rushden Lakes. Once into Rushden Lakes the walk is surrounded by greenery and water until the outskirts of Wellingborough. Some of the paths are narrow and can be muddy so probably only suitable for a serious off-road cyclist....

Off-road vehicles use the by-way next to the railway line which disturbs the peace and also churns up the ground. Not very pretty, but a good link to other, more picturesque, routes out of Burton Latimer....

Not bike friendly due to stile and steep stairs after crossing A14....

Starts as pavement then a grassy track next to the river, overgrown at some points but overall an enjoyable walk across the meadows...
