Description

Ripley to Cobham via Wisley Common and Ockham Common.
This route uses the extensive common lands in this part of Surrey to connect two villages which once were staging posts on the old Portsmouth to London road. Features on the way include Wisley Gardens, home to the Royal Horticultural Society, and the semaphore tower at the top of Telegraph Hill on Ockham Common. The route also crosses the A3 and M25 using pedestrian bridges.
Mostly footpaths, mostly good. Some muddy paths, and Wisley Common can be very wet in places if the season is a wet one, as also the section through meadows by the River Mole, near Cobham. Kissing gates, stiles, and slightly wonky bridges through the meadows.
Refreshment opportunities at Wisley Gardens cafe (follow the pedestrian access signs for Wisley Gardens when crossing Wisley Lane); and a good roadside cabin in the Ockham Common car park, which is located a few metres south of the route on the east side of the A3 (closes at 4.00).

This is in part a remake of Ripcob One, which needs an amendment to the RHS Wisley section. I found that this route via Wisley Common is shorter, and perhaps preferable to walking through the extensive car parks, even if wetter underfoot

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
