Description
This is an alternative , higher-level route for PontAmm. It follows the Heart of Wales Line Trail, and avoids the access difficulties noted on the lower level route; as well as giving fabulous views! Caution though - it crosses open moorland and, in extreme weather or low visibility, this section is not advisable. The route has no access issues (though there are some boggy sections) but does have considerable elevation gain. This is steeper if you are going from Ammanford - Pontarddulais, but is considerable either way round!
Both Ammanford and Pontarddulais have shops, pubs, cafes, railway and bus stations. There are no facilities along the path between the two settlements.
The route is pretty well marked with the Heart of Wales Line Trail markers - a roundel with a train crossing a viaduct. On the open moorland there is a rough track which you can follow, with intermittent footpath marker posts

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

13 Mar 2024Loved walking this route!!! It's a star. You can expect some really stunning views.
Everyone in Pontarddulais and Ammanford should try it!
I enjoyed this one with Hannah on a walk between Swansea and Llandeilo over two days.
There is a 250 metre ascent, but it's long and not too steep. You can expect it to be wet underfoot at the top if it's been raining.

13 Mar 2024I'm giving this one the full five stars for the total endorphinated joy of going straight up out of Pontarddulais and onto the moors. The climb was pretty quick and then the route stays on the top for ages with lovely views back over the Loughor Estuary and the Gower and the sea at the far west end. Got a nice Coaltown Coffee on the way. Heart of Wales' line walking route makes it very easy - it follows it the whole way. Bit of flytipping was a bit sad.

09 Jan 2023NOTE - this review is written from Ammanford - Pontarddulais, not the other way around!
This is a challenging walk, but a beautiful one. The navigation is pretty straightforward, the route is part of the long distance Heart of Wales Line Trail, marked at intervals with a roundel showing a train crossing a viaduct.
Leaving Ammanford, walk behind the big Tesco superstore to pick up the Amman Valley cycleway, which you follow to Pantyffynnon. From here on, it's uphill for a fair way! Follow the road up through Garnswllt before turning left (well marked with footpath sign) along a track/driveway and then right up a long flight of steps. The footpath is well marked through a few fields and, when in doubt, just keep heading uphill ... Eventually you'll emerge onto a track on the open mountain. When this peters out, just head slightly right and uphill for a short distance until you come to the road. Cross the road, locate the footpath marker the other side and follow the track/path across the mountain. There are intermittent footpath markers, but its pretty clear on the ground. Enjoy the views! Once you get to the trig point the path gets a little indistinct, but keep going in the same direction and you'll pick it up again. It's downhill all the way into Pontarddulais from here! The path then drops steeply off to your right, down a short, sharp hill - at the bottom of the hill, turn left onto the clear track and follow it until you get to the gate off the common. Follow the lane down, then at the end of the lane turn right onto the road into Pontarddulais itself.
You'll need proper walking shoes/boots for this (esp in winter, it gets very muddy in places) and take care on the open section in bad weather. Not recommended in poor visibility or extreme weather conditions. But a spectacular link between the two places and pretty easy to follow. You'll need to be able to manage steps, stiles and a considerable elevation gain (and loss). Enjoy - it's worth it!.
