Description
This is an alternative route between Newcastle Central Station and Four Lane Ends Interchange. The objective of this route was to make the most of Newcastle Quayside, Ouseburn and Jesmond Dene. It takes in restaurants, bars and artwork along the Newcastle Quayside and the lower reaches of the Ouse Burn. There has been a lot of regeneration in these former industrial and commercial areas. A climb out of the valley takes you through some woodland and a park before descending into the beautiful woodland along the burn and through the beautiful Jesmond Dene. A futher climb takes you past a hospital and then along what was an old Waggon Way before walking along streets to Four Lane Ends. This is a really nice walk which is full of interest

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Feb 2024I walked this route from Four Lane Ends (Longbenton) to Newcastle Central Station. You start out crossing roads then walking past some shops down a busy urban street. Turn right past the pub along a shared cycle track until you get to the Freeman Hospital where there is a sign for Jesmond Dene. A short walk beside the hospital brings you to a path besides a playing field before descending along tarmacked paths down into the Dene. There was a short flight of steps. As you walk down stream beside the river there are a number of alternative paths available. This is a managed park with attractive woodland and river viewpoints.
You cross under the Armstrong Bridge to a different section of the walk which is very muddy. I looked at deviating across some grass but there was not much to be gained. Appropriate footwear is advised.
You climb up out of the valley then cross over and through a recreational area before descending into the valley again. Ouseburn has seen a lot of development over the past few years and this was a pleasant walk beside the river with a mixture of old and new buildings. There are more cafes and pubs when you get close to the River Tyne.
You then have an easy walk along the quayside with plenty of opportunities for refreshment before climbing up past the Castle Keep to your destination. There is some lovely wooded parkland, and architectural and historic interest along this route.
