Help connect Longbenton

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Longbenton’s Slow Ways.

Lovely time of year to walk through the parks but following weeks of rain there were quite a lot of muddy parts and some of the paths were quite slippy. Ouseburn valley area always a pleasure to walk through especially by Ouseburn Farm....

At this time of year, Jesmond Dene feels like a rain forest with mature trees and lots of birdlife. Once you are in the Dene, it is nice and flat, but those with accessibility needs might want to take an alternative route down the lovely Jesmond Park West and enter the Dene/Armstrong Park from Armstrong Bridge where it is not as steep....

Walk this route

A short walk beside the hospital brings you to a path besides a playing field before descending along tarmacked paths down into the Dene. As you walk down stream beside the river there are a number of alternative paths available. Ouseburn has seen a lot of development over the past few years and this was a pleasant walk beside the river with a mixture of old and new buildings....

Apart from the blocked section this is a pleasant route which is why I have counterintuitively given it three stars despite flagging it for access. The route is easy walking....

As the route continues through Jesmond Dene, it was very muddy on the day I covered it, to the point where I was concerned about losing my footing on the soft mud at times....

This walk is fantastic if you love trains as you are up close to the metro line for much of the route and it includes a level crossing. Photo 6 - Path alongside metro Photo 7 - Steps to Level Crossing...

Walk this route

To avoid an uncontrolled ECML level crossing and a narrow muddy section - Continue along the wagonway, then turn right to cross the road level crossing and continue straight to reach Killingworth Lake. To avoid a flight of steps - At the flying Scotsman continue along the road, turn right onto the main road and follow the pavement over the bridge to rejoin the route3 This path continues all the way to the carpark at which point you should cross straight over the road and continue along a wide wooded waggonway. Having past under the large road bridge the path takes an unexpected turn to the left to cross the East Coast Main Line. Cross to continue straight and follow this road until you reach the Flying Scotsman. Continue straight and veer left to rejoin the main road....
