Description
A tweaked version of Netcou One, which I hope clarifies the confusion I experienced at Farthing Down, where choice of path can make a difference to ease of passage!
From Netherne there's a steep drop on a tricky path through woods, then emerge into farmland. Cross Drive Road - an old deeply rutted bridle path which is difficult for foot passage - and go through a gate into a field. Walk uphill, then a quick in-and-out through a gate onto Drive Road and then straight through another gate onto Farthing Down. At Farthing Down walk uphill to the motor road, cross the road, then drop down the other side before turning towards Coulsdon.
Road walking in Coulsdon, pass close to Coulsdon South station for an early finish (late start), before official finish-line at Coulsdon Town station.
Mostly good paths, although the woodland section at Netherne is steep and rooty in places. Be prepared for slippery ground in a few places too. There may be docile cows on Farthing Down.
Netherne has a village store but no other refreshments, and no benches near the meeting point - if you explore the village off-route there should be something to sit on near the cricket ground area. No public transport, nearest bus stop is at Hooley on the A23, which can be accessed using Slow Way Bannet

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

04 Jan 2024This is a lovely countryside walk - I went from Coulsdon to Netherene. The terrain can be challenging - a fair few climbs and declines and there were lots of overturned trees (from the strong winds recently) and can be slippy with leaves. The views are great and it is mostly off-road (except for the start in Coulsdon and the arrival in Netherene's quiet streets). There was one path into the woods towards Netherene that I had to double check I was on the right track so just watch out for that turning but otherwise it is quite easy to follow with the map.
It is always a pleasure to walk through Farthing Downs and never ceases to surprise me how quickly you can feel away from the traffic of south London!.

08 Sep 2022Excellent route across Farthing Downs between Netherne and Coulsdon.
I walked Coulsdon to Netherne. I was checking Netcou one, and went a bit astray at Farthing Downs, so decided to make a small reroute to make it clearer which path to take.
After some unavoidable road walking at Coulsdon the route goes onto the Downs. This is such a good way to trek south out of London, big skies and a herd of docile National Trust cows letting the urban fade away.
Thanks to a local lady who stopped her horse to chat, I discovered the best way off the Downs is to avoid Drive Road (slippy, rutted, best left to the horses) and track parallel in the adjacent field. There is a quick ‘in and out’ onto Drive Road where the NT Downs ends and the field begins. Hopefully I have made this clear on the route.
The approach to Netherne is alongside a field and then uphill through woods. This is the trickiest part underfoot, steep, rooty in places, potentially slippery in others.
On arrival at Netherne (my second time) I once again looked in vain for a bench to rest up; a local man said there is some seating near the cricket ground, which is a little off route but worth knowing.
There is no public transport at Netherne; I walked on to the bus stop on the A23 using Bannet Two.
