Description
If you use an Ordance Survey map to navigate the route please note there are places where their marked rights of way deviate from the reality. This line was placed carefully to use the real paths so you can trust it if the OS line seems iffy.
A straightforward and very scenic route between Hawkinge and Lyminge going across steep sided valleys with attractive views. Designed by Stephen Crouch and originally uploaded as LymHaw 2. You will probably meet many sheep and perhaps tanks or squaddies on training exercises, possibly with weapons. Along the way there are steep grassy and possibly rutted muddy slopes, gates, stiles, more deep ruts and potentially very muddy sections.
On the ground this route is almost the same as LymHaw 2 just with a more precise line. It is only different in Hawkinge Cemetery (owned by the District Council) where the obvious east-west Public Footpath (shown on Kent County Council and Ordnance Survey maps) has been blocked by a fence and some dead hedging. There is a (semi-)official diversion to the south but it's not quite as simple, this way steers you clear of mourners at the crematorium or parked on the main drive. This version fits tight to the actual positions of footpaths when the mapped Public Rights of Way positions can be ambiguous or seemingly wrong or diverted. Hopefully it will be easy to navigate with confidence, particularly within the Military Training Area where stern signs warn you to keep to the Right of Way but the zigzag line on OS maps suggests climbing over several fences.
There is no convenient resting point or public transport connection on the route but it's pretty short and Hawkinge and Lyminge both have small shops and some refreshments options. Buses to Hawkinge are fairly frequent, various route numbers from Canterbury, Folkestone or, less often, Dover. Lyminge is only on the 18 bus route between Canterbury and Hythe

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
