Help connect Lyminge

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Lyminge’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

The first half of the walk is a beautiful, easy, flat or gently undulating walk up this wide chalk valley of wheat fields and sheep grazings, with views around. After Wingmore the walking becomes harder work as the route zigzags back and forth across the valley and onto the higher ground either side of it. The change of walking effort was somehow annoying, even though I like walking up and down hills, as it had been just so relaxed and pleasurable ambling along in the valley. As almost all of this walk is on the Elham Valley Way, the route is well signed, which didn't stop me overshooting and having to backtrack a bit where the path heads down to Wingmore Court Farm, but I wasn't really concentrating....

It is a slight tweak to make it as easy to follow as possible and also to go through more of Elham village which is attractive and such a small detour that it's worth it to go past the shop and several places to eat. It follows the Elham Valley Way nearly from one village to the other. This avoids the "busy/dangerous road" from the LymBar 1 review and follows the Elham Valley Way for longer. Elham village has a shop, several pubs, tearooms plus bus route 17 which also stops at Lyminge and a few other places along the road can be easily reached....

It successfully avoids the "busy/dangerous road" from the LymBar 1 review and slightly improves the unclear line at Whitehouse Farm....

There is one footpath that has been deliberately blocked and some other mapping issues which made the navigation somewhat uncertain, including inside a Military Training Zone where soldiers were actually firing towards the path. The attached map (photo 1) shows where there are issues with the Ordance Survey Map (marked as 1-7), or with the line of LymHaw 2 (A-F). From the notes on their photo survey by the route's author I think it’s the route they actually walked along. Either the OS line is on the other side of a fence from where the path in use is, or the LymHaw 2 route line does the same. The issues were magnified by the stern “Danger” signs to stay on the path (photo 4, they don't mean the path shown on the goverment issued maps!), the gunfire (photo 5, weapons pointing at the path I’d just walked along!) and the 'stiles' (photo 6) at each OS theoretical cross-over position. It’s not actually used by the route but checking it began my distrust of the OS mapping. I think you actually walked the tighter-mapped version I've posted as LymHaw 3 so your review and survey would work just as well there if you can re-post them....

Easy to start/finish at Sandling Station if required, although you would be missing out on the charming seaside town of Hythe. Steep climb out of Saltwood up to Tolsford Hill but well worth it for the views....

There were a couple of issues: a golf course (almost ruined the walk, fantastic bunkers but terrible path maintenance), although we loved the hills they could be less enjoyable to others....

Walk this route

We've been told by a Slow Wayer that part of this route involves walking along the B2068 past Farthing Common Plant Centre. This is a fast road with no footpath that they would not recommend walking. Ashlym two is an alternative that goes via Skeete and is only on the B2068 for a short distance....
