Description

Enjoy beautiful Welsh countryside between two small spa towns (Llanwrtyd Wells the smallest town in Great Britain - apparently) and also a real sense of wild and remoteness even in a rural area. This route basically uses the Heart Of Wales Trail. This is based around the Heart of Wales rail line so you get the bonus of public transport between the two towns, a tried and tested route and one that is fairly well marked and maintained. It's possible to break this into a shorter walk by using the station at Cynghordy. There are some great river sections, a fantastic viaduct, and great views across rolling countryside. If starting at Llandovery remember its up all the way - the climb into Crychan Forest is particularly steep and long climb. Although the Heart of Wales trail does use some country lanes do not worry about traffic there is hardly any up in the hills. There are some boggy sections and stiles

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

14 Nov 2022 Autumn

If you really want to get away from it and total peace and quiet you can't beat this beautiful walk. For the entire walk I did not meet another walker - incredibly selfish perhaps but I was in desperate need of being away from everything - and this walk certainly provides that. Although it uses country lanes just two cars passed me. It cuts next to the river Towi and across Afon Bran and goes under the magnificent Cwmcuttan viaduct. I stopped for a picnic at the mossed over tumbled down ruins of a cottage. There are quite a few points where the walk cuts across the railway line. Luckily its not very busy - so just be careful and stop and listen before crossing. The hills and valleys are beautiful and I was very lucky getting the tail end of Autumn and some great light as well.

At SN 80240 41277 do not bother following the V of the Heart of Wales Trail across the fields - I just cut straight across the field - there is no fence as per the map - it saves a fair bit of time.

I am not a fan of the Forestry Commission's massive mono culture plantations at Crychan - but it was quiet and peaceful and the track was solid ground apart, from one lake sized puddle - so you can get a bit of speed up.

This is a surprisingly challenging walk as there is a lot of soft ground and plenty of rolling hills to negotiate - however the countryside is fantastic !

A word of warning at Bryn-hynog farm. The border collie is lovely and friendly and will follow you. However the other dog Flossie (brown and black) although friendly to humans was not friendly to the farmer's own sheep. Flossie fooled me and followed me for most of the track down to the road and then suddenly ran down the track and chased some sheep. Luckily a friend of the owner came along the track in their car and was able to get Flossie back up to the farm. Unfortunately Flossie had chased three sheep over the railway crossing and onto the A road - so I had to phone the police. Don't expect you'll get this drama - but just worth keeping an eye out !.
