Description
The area between Gosforth and Newcastle is largely urban but the route takes a path across the Town Moor, which is a large grassed area close to the centre of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Other parts of the route follow roads using adjacent pavements. Major roads are avoided as much as possible

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

17 Feb 2024I walked/cycled this route and overall it was great. The Town Moor and Exhibition Park were nice to walk through. However, Dukes Moor was very muddy and difficult with my bike. There were some unprotected cycle lanes on Gosforth High Street and Queen Victoria Road. There were a few poor crossings - from Exhibition park to Queen Victoria Road and some side road crossings on Gosforth High Street.

05 Jun 2022A very pleasant route with varied surroundings which takes you from central Gosforth to Newcastle city centre by Central Station, or vice versa, being largely the natural fastest walking route between the two except for crossing some Moors instead of going straight down the main and busy 'Great North Road' but still managing to stay impressively close to a direct 'as the crow flies' route, as can be seen from the route on the map.
Do note though that there is a fun fair called The Hoppings which is held in mid Summer on the Town Moor which will likely affect the accessibility or overall availability of that part of the route, as there may be large areas gated off or taken up by components of the fair!
(Taking the Gosforth starting point in this description) you start along the roadside going down Gosforth high street, with plenty of shops and pubs available, then move onto Duke's Moor and the Town Moor which are both very lovely wide open green spaces (see photos for an indication). Numerous cows were present on the side of the former path when we walked this (summer 2022) so care would need to be taken and children would need to be supervised. There was no formal paved path on the former either, so depending how long the grass gets, it may not be accessible to those with pushchairs, road (or thin tyre) bikes, or using wheelchairs or mobility scooters ('Gosnew two' provides a great alternative for these cases), though the Town Moor has a somewhat-smoothed stone path that should be decent enough for any of these.
The cut through Exhibition Park is nice and will take you past Wylam Brewery, a lake, a play park and a skate park area. There's a subway path which takes you under the Central Motorway safely.
On the Newcastle side you get a nice urban stroll: past various university buildings, then avoiding the most busy area of Northumberland Street by going down Percy Street and Newgate Street, where plenty of facilities and shops are available for refreshments or toilet breaks, etc.
One further thing to note is that the Newcastle centre part of this walk coincides with locations common for drinking, so if you do this route in the late afternoon or evening you are likely to come across lots of groups of people on a 'night out', especially near The Gate and Central Station, which might be something you want to avoid if you want a peaceful stroll (or you might want to seek out, who knows)!.
