Description

This route avoids the non-public roads in Esher.
It stays off-road apart from the unavoidable few hundred yards at each end.
Arbrook Commons is flat and forested throughout.
Esher Common and Oxshott Heath both require a bit of climb-and-descent, and both reward the walker with views.
There are cafes and hence facilities at both ends, but nothing in between apart from The Swan Inn less than an mile from Esher

29 Aug 2023 Summer

I walked this on a warm and slightly sunny afternoon, from Esher to Oxshott.

It starts off in Esher along a busy road (photo #1), but luckily not for very long. From then on the route is really nice. First along urban footpaths (photo #2, #3), and once you pass the Milbourne Lodge School (photo #4), along the wooded footpaths (photo #5) of Arbrook Common, and Esher Common (photo #7, #8). Crossing Copsem Lane was a little tricky, although traffic stopped for me (photo #6). The heather on Esher Common was in bloom (photo #9), providing delightful purple colours. The A3 is crossed by a bridge (photo #10), and then the route (photo #11) climbs towards the hill (photo #12, #13) overlooking Oxshott (where I had a little rest). The last part is along annoyingly busy roads, with narrow pavements.

23 Dec 2022 Winter

I walked from Oxshott to Esher on a showery day.
A lovely green walk bracketed by roadside walking at either end.
The road out of Oxshott is nasty, very busy, noisy smelly road with narrow pavements, it is mercifully short.
By contrast Oxshott heath is beautiful, muddy rooty paths lead up to a War Memorial with benches and good views. It had rained a lot overnight and the walk has big puddles and mud, not deep though and nothing that big boots and a little care couldn't overcome. There is a bridge over the A3 with steep approaches, then through open woods , lots of variety on this walk. After Arbrook Common there is a long passage then wide streets to Esher town centre (another 2km to the station).
A lovely attractive walk even on a wet winter's day.

I walked this route in the Oxshott to Esher direction. Even using a gps, I found it was not always obvious which path to take on Oxshott heath as there are so many paths. Parts of the route are muddy after rain and parts are steep with tree roots as a trip hazard. The crossing of the A244 Copsem Lane is usually very busy and unpleasant. However, this is probably the best route available. Walking the pavement alongside the A244 would be more direct but very unpleasant with the traffic levels.

Mainly off-road. A bit of busy pavement road-side walking required at each end. Goes through Arbrook Common, Esher Common, and Oxshott Heath - three pleasant and different green spaces, mostly forested.
