26 Apr 2022The route out of Devizes follows pavement along St Johns St, Long St, and the A342 to Wick Lane, which whilst scenic is busy with vehicles. There is a quieter route to Wick Lane which is the Devmar one and two routes.
The section down to Drew's Pond, and up onto Potterne Field are very pretty, and the views on Potterne Field are fantastic ( assuming you do it in good weather ! )
Ditto the views down to and past Crookwood Mill Farm.
After crossing the 2 track main railway line which has 2 sets of 40 steps, up to the railway, and back down again.
The fields leading to Knights Leaze Farm generally have cows/bullocks/calves in them, and at the time of walking one field had about 50 VERY lively bullocks.
Urchfont village is very pretty, and has pub, shop etc.
Following a climb up Urchfont Hill, there is along section of by-way which is compacted hardcore w grit topping, or adjacent earth by-way all the way to Casterley Camp.
Again, the views are expansive looking towards the Pewsey Downs on the left, or over the Westdown Artillery Range on the right
The next section is 1.4 mi of quiet tarmac road down to the A342. Beware, this crossing has limited visibility, the two lane road is busy, so one should not dawdle. The final section is pavement down into Upavon.
The route was recorded on GPS as 12.60 mi
En route there were 7 galv ped gates, 3 galv k/gates, 4 stiles, 1 timber gate and 1 field gate.
