Help connect Stonehaven
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Stonehaven’s Slow Ways.

Short review - Thanks to Kev for prior report, was always wary of the 4k by main road, that stretch isn't enjoyable but is doable. Start of walk was nice, then there was main road, few of the trails are quite overgrown and as Kev said the farm track past Downies was muddy in places and even had a big puddle that was more a lake (ok probably 20/30m long) that took up the whole track. 2.5-4k starts off walking the road in golf course, good views to the water, then it's under the viaduct along a paved nature trail, loads of wild plants, butterflys etc? Bit much in way of road walking for my liking and that 4k by main road isn't for everyone...

I tried to walk the coastal route 2 years back and can confirm what previous reviewer said regarding it being eroded and overgrown. I dunno if I was just walking through farmland or was I meant to have various views to the sea. Thankfully its a shorter section this time and weirdly they paved 300yards or so of it before it's back to walking on grass verge....

Walk this routeCastle Haven, Dunnottar. **Care required on the clifftop section at Dunnottar castle** Join the grassy verge on the A92 That's the grassy verge finished This was a quiet road, approx 3 cars drove past Optional cliff top path for one final view or return the same way up the hill Next section is a long straight road going gently uphill until the prow, then gently downhill until the end Turn right at the foot of the straight road to pick up the shared use path towards Dunnottar castle When the path runs out, there is a grassy verge walk for a further 5 mins until you pick up the turn off for the castle Reach Dunnotar Castle (Optional 30 min down and back, to have a walk around Castle Haven)...

Some of the paths are so overgrown you cant walk, tried to look for other routes. The path went right through a persons house, will need to be rerouted. At other side paths overgrown as well and dangerous had to try another walk...

Not a great route as some of the paths were inaccessible so diversions were regularly needed which took you onto a busy road. Catterline is a very pretty place to visit though....

The only part of the path I could walk was on the country road....
Pamela Mclaughlin
Could not complete this route as there were many paths across farms with closed gates and some paths were so overgrown that they could not be walked. There is a great cycle path between these points which I think would be a better way to walk....
Fiona Gilmore
There is a road bridge to the south that would potentially be a better way to cross into Stonehaven. See image below....
