Help connect Soham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Soham’s Slow Ways.

There aren't too many stiles or kissing gates which means the first half (if coming from Soham) would potentially be suitable for cyclists or perhaps other wheelers - but there are quite a few narrow paths and gates etc near Waterbeach (and indeed one section which says cyclists need written permission) which means its not suitable for these sort of users the whole way. Overall - if you have a half day or so to spare I would consider doing this walk - it also connects nicely to Soham and Waterbeach stations if you get the timings right so you can easily come from further afield too....

When walking along the Cam, stay on the embankment and wear long trousers if you have them as the nettles are dense in places....

In a couple of places where the route crosses a field the path is not obvious on the ground, but the signs for the path are clear....

From Waterbeach to Wicken, it mostly runs along footpaths and very quiet roads, whilst the Wicken to Soham leg proceeds along an attractive network of green lanes / drove routes. There is a pub at Wicken and there are toilets and a tearoom at the National Trust's Wicken Fen visitor centre (just off the route). All in all, an enjoyable route, and one which I would recommend to others....

The central portion of the route follows part of the Lodes Way cycle route (NC11) and is very clearly signposted towards Wicken, using very quiet roads and gravel cycle tracks....

The route is not the most picturesque, although the stretch along the river is pleasant enough. The paths were generally well-maintained, apart from one kissing gate that was overgrown with nettles. There was some confusion at the Soham end of the walk regarding the route under the railway line - we ended up going under a very low bridge to reach the other side....

Several options for pub stops on the way in Upware and Wicken, plus presumably plenty of options in Soham....
