We crossed the road to pass the Old Grammar School/Verve building, apparently originally built in 1412, and now used as a wedding venue. The very pleasant canal formed the bulk of the route, with several locks and bridges....

The canal from Rochdale is a real delight, offering a peaceful start to the journey with charming small bridges and the occasional old industrial building adding a sense of history....

There are a couple of points where you can cut across a park As you approach Rochdale, the route takes you through a park rather than along the road (photo) or where it’s actually better to stick to the road....

The big junction to get back on the canal path has sign posts - follow those rather than the route....

Once up, you skirt Whitworth, pass a church and then there's some walking on agricultural stone roads. In one place it suggests there is a path but you need to follow the road....

Coming off the tow path stretch we ran into an access issue due to a new housing estate having been built closing off the suggested route near Stanycliffe....

After navigating that, we got into another in-between hills space, which was a little tricky to navigate as well, but a mixture of proper track roads and paths through the landscape of rolling plateau affording good views, including the high rises of Manchester in the distance....

After crossing Befield Lane it passes underneath the railway line and follows Newbold Street, turning left on to Rochdale Road where after a short distance there is an access point for the canal tow path....
