The route follows an old railway line. If heading for Queensferry then continue on the railway path and omit Kirkliston....

The path is in poor condition, narrow for most of the distance between Kirkliston and Winchburgh, and overgrown and muddy in places. In heavy rain conditions the path can flood....

At the other end, when leaving the railway path, the route involves a short section of B road with no pavement (including crossing under a railway bridge) or by climbing a slightly-crumbling staircase (Photo 2)....

However, most of this is alongside very busy roads and would not be a particularly nice route to walk. The crossings at Gogar roundabout (A720/A8) are technically possible, but are across multi-lane trunk roads with no traffic signals. There is an underpass alongside the tram line which could be used instead...

Between Kirkliston and Dalmeny the path is gravel and can become muddy and flooded in heavy rain periods. Between Dalmeny and Queensferry the route is paved....
