Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

25 Jul 2021This is a good route, but has a couple of potential access issues. It is quite flat due to it formerly being the route of a railway line, but is narrow in places due to vegetation on both sides of the path—there are sections where two people on foot might struggle to pass.
The route begins (at the Kirkliston end) with a barrier across the path (Photo 1). At the other end, when leaving the railway path, the route involves a short section of B road with no pavement (including crossing under a railway bridge) or by climbing a slightly-crumbling staircase (Photo 2).
The surfaces are generally good, although it can be muddy after heavy rain.
Along the way, there are a number of places to "exit" the route (usually via a staircase) to the adjacent roads. Also, there are several places where the vegetaion and tree cover opens up and affords views of the surrounding areas.
The vast majority of this route is unlit.

30 Apr 2021This is a very pleasant route which follows an old railway line. Between Kirkliston and Dalmeny the path is gravel and can become muddy and flooded in heavy rain periods. Between Dalmeny and Queensferry the route is paved.

23 Apr 2021A very pleasant route that follows the course of the former railway. Off-road for the majority of its length, with an exception on approach to Dalmeny where a short section of road and a flight of steps must be navigated.
