Help connect Bonnybridge

Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.

Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.

Give a hike and help get a for every one of Bonnybridge’s Slow Ways.

Latest Updates

The route set off from Kilsyth up the very nice pedestrianised Main Street, past shops. Coach Road, and the unclassified road down to the canal, had no pavement, but the several cars using it were driven safely. There was the sound of traffic on one side and trains on the other but both were fairly far away. There were planes occasionally going overhead, yet despite this, and the cyclists and other walkers, and the distant sound of traffic and trains, it still felt peaceful and beautiful....

Review of Slow Ways route Bonfal two (Bonnybridge to Falkirk). Now that MaryOz has mapped an alternative route (Bonfal two) incorporating these work-arounds, I am reposting my review here. The route leaves Bonnybridge via a tunnel under the canal and heads out of town along a quiet country road....

An attractive walk through a park with Roman ruins, visiting the Falkirk Wheel, and beside the Forth and Clyde Canal. The walk out of Falkirk leaves the main road for a lane by a park, to reach the Forth and Clyde Canal....

Additionally, where the canal goes under the railway at Falkirk, there is no towpath, and it is necessary to go up steps to the road, cross the railway, and go back down steps to reach the towpath again. I’ve corrected these with BonFal Two....

From Bonnybridge the route started through a tunnel under the Forth and Clyde Canal alongside a cobbled burn (never seen that combination before!). Walking along the canal from here was very pleasant, and there were lots of locks. The route from the canal to the main road into Falkirk, was along a quiet lane with some industry, but also some hidden nice old houses....

Mary Oz added Bonfal two, a new walk from Bonnybridge to Falkirk

Walk this route

On reaching the outskirts of Kilsyth, the route leaves the towpath and initially takes a narrow path (easy to miss) alongside a feeder burn before dropping down to an unclassified road which passes a riding centre, crosses a bridge and turns left onto Coach Road. The final section into the centre of Kilsyth is surprisingly steep (obviously not a problem if going in the other direction) and the beginning of Mid Barrwood Road is easy to miss (and initially very rough underfoot/wheel). The path down to the unclassified road on the edge of Kilsyth is very narrow and steep, and would not be easy to negotiate for a bicycle or buggy (and certainly not a wheelchair)...

Review of Slow Ways route Bonfal one (Bonnybridge to Falkirk). I walked this route in February 2023 and found it easy to follow and full of points of interest. At this point the route provides excellent views of another fascinating piece of engineering, this time much more recent....

Walk this route

The route begins in Cumbernauld Town Centre which is a huge, multi-floored retail and leisure centre. Once out of the centre, the route makes its way, via some of the many walkways and underpasses that criss-cross the town, to Forest Road. The route then follows the busy Forest Road for a kilometre or so but there is only a grass verge to walk on so I left the route at this point and followed various pedestrian paths through Abronhill, re-joining the route just after Forest Road turns onto the much quieter Walton Road (at NS79197607). The route then follows Walton Road to a sharp left hand turn where it leaves to join a very rough, muddy track heading east. However the section along the verge of Forest Road in Cumbernauld and the large number of locked gates that had to be negotiated both mean that I am unable to fully recommend the route to anyone else...
