Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A route of two halves, which I walked with my dog (a pug/border terrier cross). From Woburn Sands station there is a long stretch on the Woburn Sands - Cranfield road, which although it is two lane has no speed restrictions and no pavement or verge for most of it. It is therefore not very nice walking even though it was not too busy at present given we are still partially locked down. I therefore opted to take the second of the two route options as it got off the road soonest.
From the road there was a stretch of rather uninspiring bridleway which led onto a new bridge over the A421 and the M1. The path up onto the bridge was cinder and would have been hard going for a wheelchair or pushchairs but I think any one using these would have given up on the road section anyway.
After going over the roads the route was much nicer - the track takes you through the very attractive village of Hulcote, literally through some people's back gardens! This was very pleasant although it also feels a bit awkward. We then went through some fields in one of which we had a very close encounter with 4 very curious horses who cantered down to check us out. I don't mind horses but people not used to them might have found them intimidating (my dog studiously ignored them but he was on a very tight leash!). The route then continued on through Hulcote before taking you across another field this time with a number of highland cattle in it. Once again they hurried over to look at us and, given their very pointed horns, once again a bit intimidating. Facing up to them did cause them to stop approaching when they had got to within a couple of yards of us and we were able to walk on without them following but I know some people would not have wanted to go into that field. At then beginning of this cross-country section there were a number of gates that were all easy to open but afterwards there were 3 or 4 stiles and also one kissing gate along the route.
After the highland cattle the rest of the route was largely along the edge of arable fields with nice wide grassy field margins and a bit through woods and scrub with some outstanding views over to Milton Keynes and in places to the Greensand Ridge. This bit was very nice and joins up with the John Bunyan trail. The last bit is well waymarked but earlier on the waymarking is a bit confusing - I had downloaded the route so was able to follow it but would have struggled otherwise I think.
You enter Cranfield on a quiet road and end up at the Swan pub and the war memorial where there is a bus stop.
