Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Longer but almost all off road and on canal towpaths than the other routes between Wolverhampton and Wrightwick.
If walking Wrightwick to Wolverhampton as I was the path is flat for the first half but then you turn right onto Birmingham Main Line canal and it’s all uphill with lots of locks.
Doable by bike as well as on foot. If using a wheelchair you need the key to unlock four gates (one pictured) on the Birmingham Main Line canal section. This also slows down bikes as very tight but is passable.
Quiet and peaceful but also popular and well used, said hello to lots of people. Nice to be totally away from roads.
Mixture of sun and shady with old trees canal side. Some ground (would be muddy if wet) some solid/ tarmac and some very old stones for cart horses grip!
When approaching Wolverhampton Station there is a big willow tree in front of the blue sign saying to come off the canal. Then it’s crossing road at traffic lights with pedestrian crossing for people on foot and bikes and onto shared pavement which goes under bridge then left up to station.

Quite indirect but remarkably simple and relaxing to follow. A safe route using towpath pretty well the whole way. Not much navigation required which is just as well because the plotting is terrible. The line follows the wrong side of the canal and is very vague at times. I'm pleased to report that the errors are obvious and I never felt confused. The crossing of the dual carriageway is unnecessary having arrived in Wolverhampton but isn't impossible. It's the best of the three routes between Wightwick and Wolverhampton.

Very pleasant and safe route, though far from direct.
You do not need to cross the ring road twice in wolverhampton, you can stick to the outside and pick up the route by the canal.
Cyclists can use the signed cycle path following a disused railway line between Aldersly canal Junction and Compton to avoid a section of towpath that can be busy at times and narrow in places.
