Help connect Wolverhampton
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wolverhampton’s Slow Ways.

The highlight however is the section over Sedgley's Beacon Hill where the views are amazing....

Quite a functional feel at the Wolverhampton end, although the design keeps you away from the busiest roads. The magic starts on reaching Sedgley Beacon which is a reasonably gentle climb and delivers views almost immediately. Direct and safe, places for food and drink at either end and very well served by frequent public transport....

David Sanderson added Sedwol three, a new walk from Sedgley to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeThe bulk of the route is along the canal towpath, and the routes at either end worked fine....

Mary Oz added Codwol two, a new walk from Codsall to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeFrom Wolverhampton train station, cross the tram tracks then follow the blue cycle signs under the road signed towpath towards Birmingham. You have to walk along the pavement at the top of the ring road, then use the pedestrian crossing and you’ll see the canal. You come off after going under Millfileds Bridge which is the main road you walk along....
Clare Mullin
First the canal, then pavement walking through the 'burbs , then through the fields at Moseley Village (which was not quite what I was expecting), then zigzagging through a housing estate, then through the lovely Willenhall Memorial Park before finally zigzagging again through the retail units and shops and into Willenhall....
Steve Litchfield
I can recommend the walk as being achievable, but as already mentioned a better route must be available?...
Steve Litchfield
I completed this walk yesterday travelling northwards from Coseley. I really enjoyed the walk. After having read the other reviews, I don't have any other detail to add other than it's an interesting journey mainly along the canal and has historic industrial interest....
Steve Litchfield
It's a really good route which takes in a lot of industrial heritage along the towpath....
Steve Litchfield
It promises to be a clever back way to the edge of Wolverhampton from the centre of Sedgley, but although the footpath starts well it eventually deteriorates and involves a bit of scrambling....
David Sanderson
Comprises of a reasonably interesting wander through the south of Wolverhampton until the first stile of the route takes you into South Staffs....

Walk this routeDavid Sanderson added Womwol two, a new walk from Wombourne to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeThe footpath out of north west Sedgley was hard to spot (where the stile took you away from the lane) and then became increasingly difficult to follow (overgrown) and needed some scrambling which lost it a star....
David Sanderson
However, the plotting on the golf course is sufficiently out to be misleading (it suggests you cross the course before you reach the actual footpath) and needs fixing...
David Sanderson
Longer but almost all off road and on canal towpaths than the other routes between Wolverhampton and Wrightwick. If walking Wrightwick to Wolverhampton as I was the path is flat for the first half but then you turn right onto Birmingham Main Line canal and it’s all uphill with lots of locks....
Clare Mullin
Walked in reverse Wolverhampton Train station to Wrightwick. There were steps or ramps on urban bits but there is one small kissing gate (pictured) entrance to nature reserve which would be difficult with a bike and impassable in a wheelchair likewise I think this was easy to walk but is well walked soil paths which are narrow in places so would need an off road bike, not very technical but not all tarmac....
Clare Mullin
Walked (ran) in the summer, and was a little overgrown in places, but not impassable...
Marion Frankland
A bit fussy direction wise, so not so easy to follow without keeping a map or phone in hand. Kissing gates but no steps or stiles, so quite accessible....
David Sanderson
David Sanderson added Wigwol three, a new walk from Wightwick to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeA good concept for a Slow Way and started well from Wolverhampton but came a cropper by the Wolves Academy. The "footpath" is privately owned and gated. I walked an alternative and will post it as a separate walk...
David Sanderson
The crossing of the dual carriageway is unnecessary having arrived in Wolverhampton but isn't impossible....
David Sanderson
This was a brilliant Slow Way - direct, offroad, easy to follow and very enjoyable. I walked with this route Mary - we spotted a lot of wildfowl along the way, as well as colourful grafetti and interesting buildings. Would defo recommend!...

From the Coseley Station side road, an alleyway led down to the canal towpath which the route stuck to all the way to Wolverhampton....
Mary Oz
Very direct, simple and safe route via canal towpath. No stiles or steps. Transport links at either end....
David Sanderson
David Sanderson added Wolwed two, a new walk from Wolverhampton to Wednesfield
Walk this routeThe routes from the towpaths are impossible, the Wolverhampton end being even more so. Otherwise the route is fine. I have corrected the errors in Wolwed two...
David Sanderson
The greenspace beyond, of Moseley Village (it's maybe too wild to describe as a park) might get muddy at times. Is the Moseley Village greenspace too wild for some tastes?...
David Sanderson
David Sanderson added Wolvwil two, a new walk from Wolverhampton to Willenhall
Walk this routeCan't comment on the overall concept of the walk but I know that the Wolverhampton end is incorrect, as are all the original Slow Ways connecting Wolverhampton via the canal. You simply can not access the meeting place in the way depicted. The more direct Wolvwil two fixes this but differs as a route from this one...
David Sanderson
David Sanderson added Wolcos two, a new walk from Wolverhampton to Coseley
Walk this routeLeaving the canal to get to the meeting place at Wolverhampton Railway Station involves a brief bit of pavement pounding and a couple of easy crossings but it is worth noting that the location of the meeting place takes you away from the stops, shops, eateries and pubs of Wolverhampton other than the Costa, the cafe and the shop at the station....
David Sanderson
It comprises of a peaceful stroll along the Birmingham Canal with a residential walk at the Coseley end and a walk along the pavement of the main road in central Wolverhampton at the other. There was no end of wildfowl on the canal which made the walk even better....
David Sanderson
David Sanderson added Wolbil two, a new walk from Wolverhampton to Bilston
Walk this routeFrom Bilston, joining the canal the route tells you to join in the wrong direction and actually encourages you to cross to the wrong side of what is actually quite a busy road....
David Sanderson
It's a walk I've done, not as a slow way, many times and I didn't remember the route from canal to station being quite so simple in Wolverhampton....
David Sanderson
The route is not quite as straight as some of the other stretches of this canal, as it follows the contour line presumably to avoid the need for locks....

Philip W Davis added Wigwol two, a new walk from Wightwick to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeYou do not need to cross the ring road twice in wolverhampton, you can stick to the outside and pick up the route by the canal. Cyclists can use the signed cycle path following a disused railway line between Aldersly canal Junction and Compton to avoid a section of towpath that can be busy at times and narrow in places....
Philip W Davis
Leaving out the street sections at either end, I have gathered some pictures together and placed on the Ipernity Photo Club site....
