Help connect Wightwick
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Wightwick’s Slow Ways.

Beginning of walk looks a bit overgrown but gets better quickly....

As such it is pretty flat and accessible but sadly the exit at Wombourne entails a flight of steps which makes the track exit at this point unavailable to wheelchairs, buggies etc....

Following the route of the old South Staffs Railway it's well used, friendly and very easy to follow....

Walk this routeA great Slow Way in theory, but the section into Lower Penn is rather pointless as it adds 1km to what should only be a 6km route. I walked a route missing it out and will submit it as a separate Slow Way...

Longer but almost all off road and on canal towpaths than the other routes between Wolverhampton and Wrightwick. If walking Wrightwick to Wolverhampton as I was the path is flat for the first half but then you turn right onto Birmingham Main Line canal and it’s all uphill with lots of locks....

Walked in reverse Wolverhampton Train station to Wrightwick. There were steps or ramps on urban bits but there is one small kissing gate (pictured) entrance to nature reserve which would be difficult with a bike and impassable in a wheelchair likewise I think this was easy to walk but is well walked soil paths which are narrow in places so would need an off road bike, not very technical but not all tarmac....

A bit fussy direction wise, so not so easy to follow without keeping a map or phone in hand. Kissing gates but no steps or stiles, so quite accessible....

David Sanderson added Wigwol three, a new walk from Wightwick to Wolverhampton
Walk this routeA good concept for a Slow Way and started well from Wolverhampton but came a cropper by the Wolves Academy. The "footpath" is privately owned and gated. I walked an alternative and will post it as a separate walk...

The crossing of the dual carriageway is unnecessary having arrived in Wolverhampton but isn't impossible....

Walk this routeYou do not need to cross the ring road twice in wolverhampton, you can stick to the outside and pick up the route by the canal. Cyclists can use the signed cycle path following a disused railway line between Aldersly canal Junction and Compton to avoid a section of towpath that can be busy at times and narrow in places....

Having walked the off-road sections of the Wightwick to Wombourne route over the years I don’t think much has changed, so I have gathered some pictures together of the South Staffs Railway walk, here in the Wightwick to Wombourne direction. beta.slowways.org/Route/Wigwom/5669...
