Description

This is a superb way to walk between Westerham and Sevenoaks, taking in some beautiful views and gorgeous woodlands. The route has a good resting place at Emmetts Garden, a National Trust Property (with tea room and accessible toilet ) that's 4km from Westerham.

This route is very similar to Wessev Two, but corrects the route so that it stays on the right of way through Whitley Forest

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked this on a sunny afternoon, from Westerham to Sevenoaks. It had rained a fair bit in the preceding week.

From Westerham town centre, it's a steep climb up through a field with sheep (photo #1). At the top, you get a great view of the North Downs. At a top of the hill, there is a little road walking, but on a good and safe pavement (photo #2). When you leave the road, the route takes you along a very empty lane up a hill, although it is also possible to go through the wood towards French Street (but it's not a PROW). Once at the top, a muddy path with steps (photo #3) takes you back down again through a lush green field, which at the time I walked through it had a few docile cows (photo #4). The route then continues through woods, with well maintained paths (photo #5), before ending at the National Trust property "Emmetts Garden" (photo #6). Refreshments are at hand, cash (sadly) required.

After a short unsafe section along a narrow road (photo #7), the route then follows a lane (Norman Street) which is also narrow and has blind humps (photo #8). You go uphill again to end up going through a horsey area with more views of the North Downs (photo #9). After another section along a quiet lane, you cross a road to end up on the "Montreal Estate", which has plenty of PROWs (photo #10). The paths were often muddy, with a swampy area as well (photo #11). After rounding a lake, there is a steep climb (photo #12) through more woods of the estate. Walking alongside Dibden Lane wasn't great, although I saw a deer underneath the A21 Sevenoaks Bypass. The route then sneaks through some woods to end up on an alley-like PROW (Clenches Farm Lane, photo #13), before turning North through the Kippington Private estate (the route is a PROW, photo #14). I probably would have gone further along it and walk through to Granville Road in Sevenoaks instead. Kippington Road was very narrow at first, and the walk along the A224 to end up at the station wasn't great either.

I have to mark this one star down, as there were a few (but short) unsafe sections on narrow roads.

A nice walk across woodland and farmland. Reasonably direct, and mostly off road, with good amenities at either end. An easy diversion to Sevenoaks Town Centre is possible which has plenty of possibilities for refreshments.

This is a great Slow Way. I really enjoyed walking this route.

Possibly the best way to get between Westerham and Sevenoaks!?

I've shared this route as an alternative to Wessev Two, correcting a couple of small access/accuracy issues.

Via Emmetts (NT). Several stiles, and a lot of woodland.
