Help connect Sevenoaks
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Sevenoaks’s Slow Ways.

Starting off along the Darenth Valley Path (mostly) to Otford (pretty village with tea rooms and the like) then up the North Downs escarpment (wooded path so limited views) and then cutting across a series of small steep sided valleys through pastures and small woodlands. The road through Hartley can't be avoided though, it's a long grind but has good pavements and is fairly direct....

I didn't test the road which the previous reviewer warned about but did test part of another one which felt dangerous and is easy to avoid; Harvel Road which runs just to the north of Vigo Village. You can just go straight through the village (past a pub and a shop) then into Trosley Country Park to join the North Downs Way earlier....

Something was reported to Kent CC about that path entrance a few years back but in fairness I had very limited vision from inside my hood and wasn't about to get out phone or map and check my position so I just kept walking around until I found a track into the woods in the southeastern corner....

Walk this routeThe route is quiet and pleasant, the hilly section in the middle across the Greensand Ridge is particularly nice, as are the views....

Lovely walk although slightly muddy so be ready for that But other than that route was perfect Recommended...

There was another quite long and problematic road walking stretch on Harvel Road, which goes along the north side of Vigo Village. Going through Vigo Village (past a shop and a pub) then into Trosley Country Park (nice walking, good signage) and joining the North Downs Way there seems much safer and more practical. I was surprised that the route goes pretty close to places where you can stop but not actually past them, Camer Park public loos, Vigo shop and pub, Trosley Country Park cafe and public loos, Wrotham 2 pubs and public loos....

Like the others slight diversion by the farm Then some very overgrown nettles about 200 yards worth But all round lovely walk...

We walked from Tonbridge to Sevenoaks and enjoyed stopping at Knole Park cafe for some bean stew and massive chunks of bread....

I came off the route early at Hilden Ave (Hildenborough) and walked the main road into Tonbridge because the light was going. I reckon from Hildenborough to Tonbridge High St is used a lot, e.g. There is a traffic island quite near but hidden by a slight bend head east, it's just past Farm Lane. I took a slightly different route to the end point inside Tonbridge, first along Hawden Rd and then following cycle and foot signs for the castle and station Went to a park, past the swimming pool, around the castle then beside the river I did walk down the high street last time and it does look good for restaurants, past the castle your choice is mainly takeaways....

There are many wonderful things about the route, it's a beautiful riverside path (mostly) that runs along a wide rural valley between attractive steep hills (N Downs). The clear majority of the route is on the Darent Valley Path, which is v well signposted and thought out. If the route followed Lambarde Rd, instead of through Bradbourne Lakes (a park), people wouldn't need to brave the fast and busy traffic. It would be easy for the route to use the D Valley Path instead (from just below M26 to the end nr Otford). When you get to Otford, don't use the first crossing island as you'll just need to cross back again for the bridge (no crossing there). If you are going to walk it before mid April 2023 you'll need to divert via Crockenhill as the path to A20 footbridge will be closed for a month, looks like major road drainage works....

There's the Roman Villa and Lullingstone Castle to visit and a little further on is a café in Lullingstone Country Park and Castle Farm (lavender products). There are toilets at Swanley Station (platform 1) and Lullingstone Country Park....

If you end at Tonbridge, Fuggles Beer Cafe is a great place for relaxed drinks, with a huge range of drinks (alcoholic and alcohol free). - Near Tonbridge, crossing the B245 (London Road) feels fairly treacherous. Speeding vehicles, no protected crossing within sight!...

Walk this routeThis was an enjoyable walk but there was too much road walking in the middle section where it could have easily been avoided. The footpath confusion around Fairtrough Farm mentioned in the other review is probably fine coming from the south, and coming from the north there is a sign, although it was put up by the farm owners and grimly says Keep Dogs On Leads, there is no public footpath sign. From Washneys Road (some way south of Fairtrough Farm) to the brief overlap with the North Downs Way there is a 1.5 mile road section on small lanes....

This is the most direct, flatest and fastest route, but there is a substantial section beside a busy main road. A more scenic option, albeit longer if you have the time, is Wessev four....

Walk this routeThis is a wonderful route that's a really enjoyable hike. There is one small part in Whitley Forest that takes a path through private land. I'd have given it five stars and verified it if it wasn't for that small section....

I've shared this route as an alternative to Wessev Two, correcting a couple of small access/accuracy issues....

The road walking generally involves roads that have a pavement or are quiet. A lengthy bit of busy road walking at the Hartley end, but there is a pavement throughout....

This is a very enjoyable and moderately challenging walk with a couple of ‘watering holes’ along the way. The walk took us about three and half hours at a steady pace including a lunchtime picnic at Emmetts Gardens....
A quieter more country route from Westerham to Sevenoaks. Slower and slightly harder to navigate than WESSEV1 or WESSEV3, but more pleasant to walk. We walked from Westerham to Sevenoaks, using just the Inkatlas map....

The fastest route between Sevenoaks and Westerham, very similar to WESSEV1 apart from minor changes in Westerham itself....

Routes including the main Camer Road between Meopham and Sole Street need to be diverted by Camer Park as sadly the road does not have footpaths and is subject to busy traffic. Note the current route includes the lane that passes entry to Camer Park, then path exits out onto footpaths on road (nearly but not quite complete) through Sole Street....
