Help connect Westerham
Many Slow Ways have several route options. Some will be better than others, or good for different reasons.
Our goal is for each Slow Way to have at least one route that is verified and surveyed. To be verified – and get its snail badge – a route needs at least three positive reviews.
Give a hike and help get a for every one of Westerham’s Slow Ways.

When you leave the road, the route takes you along a very empty lane up a hill, although it is also possible to go through the wood towards French Street (but it's not a PROW). After a short unsafe section along a narrow road (photo #7), the route then follows a lane (Norman Street) which is also narrow and has blind humps (photo #8). The route then sneaks through some woods to end up on an alley-like PROW (Clenches Farm Lane, photo #13), before turning North through the Kippington Private estate (the route is a PROW, photo #14)....

After leaving the residential streets of Oxted (photo #1, #2) behind, and going up hill, there is soon an open green area, with a muddy path. Sometimes they were muddy and in woods (photo #3, #5), and sometimes in open areas with sheep in the fields besides you (photo #2)....

It leaves New Addington very quickly and pretty quickly at Westerham, the other roads were all very quiet when tested. It crosses the North Downs so inevitably it is steep in a few places but the long pull up the edge of the North Downs was far gentler than any other similar Slow Way I have tested. The climb up through Hutchinson's Bank nature reserve on the edge of New Addington is also much gentler than the path used in NewWes 1 (also in SelNew 1)....

Two busy roads to cross (B269 Titsey Road and A25 Westerham Road) but I found there were good sight lines and frequent lulls in the traffic. Toilets at Leas Road, Warlingham and Fullers Hill, Westerham....

Walk this routeCharming and in places extremely steep (this is the North Downs after all) also very peaceful and remote, surprisingly so as it is mostly within Greater London. The first major feature is the steep climb up the southern escarpment of the North Downs which has fantastic views and wonderful chalk downland flowers. It cuts across farmland and horse pasture to Green Street Green then goes along the edge of High Elms Country Park to Farnborough. There are several small shops, pubs and cafes between the A21 at Green Street Green and Orpington High St, and a few bus stops....

Walk this routeSeveral sections of road walking but most are quiet except Goodley Stock Road near Westerham which is a dangerous 350m of busy lane plus a bus route (as reported in Oxtwes2) but difficult to avoid unless going a little further south using Oxtwes2 paths. (1) at Oxted Downs (as mentioned in Catoxt1) the diagonal path does not exist - follow the Vanguard Way signs downhill to the North Downs Way; (2) at Broomlands Lane, the Moorhouse Sandpits track is private and signed as dangerous - there's a footpath 150m further on which leads to the A25 layby or continue down Broomlands Lane to A25 where there's a pavement; (3) the track from Goodley Stock Road to Mill Lane is private (and flooded) - continue to the A25 and use the pavement to walk into Westerham (or you can go down Mill Lane to use the footpaths to the south of the town)....

Only 3 stars because although the countryside was lovely and there was a lot to enjoy in the first half, the second half had unsafe road walking amongst other problems. I started from Westerham and it was a good route all the way up to Chelsham Court Rd which is where the route earns its flag. If you cross to see the oncoming traffic there's not even a hedge to push/lean into, only the space between the white line and a fence. It took a long time for a relatively short distance as I had to stop and press into the hedge so often, the traffic often didn't slow or sometimes wouldn't move even slightly even when there was enough space in oncoming traffic. The level of traffic on that road wasn't any better on the second visit either (testing for NewWes 2), a constant hum from across the fields. More road walking on Fairchildes Rd - better verges but also quite a lot of traffic. The relevant bit of Park Rd is now closed to motor traffic and then there's a very good footpath to take instead of Skid Hill Lane, coming out by the secondary school. There's more non-pavement road walking on Featherbed Lane near New Addington, the verges look pretty poor on Google Street View...

East of Edenbridge there was a short bit of roadwalking along Hilders Lane and then a very short bit on the slightly busier again Little Browns Lane before the turn off for the golf course....

There's no need to walk it at all as there is a perfectly good path running just parallel through publicly owned Old Hill Common and High Elms Country Park....

It is relatively easy but not suitable for wheels or mobility issues as some big steps at Westerham end & some other steep areas. Also it can be very wet & muddy in places & some paths not large & clearly marked, so going through wooded area can be trial & error. Route crosses a couple of unbarricaded roads & passes through/near fields that may have livestock so dogs best kept on leads for at least part of the walk....

This is the most direct, flatest and fastest route, but there is a substantial section beside a busy main road. A more scenic option, albeit longer if you have the time, is Wessev four....

Along field edges with some great views and mostly farmland as far as Crockham Hill where the route crosses the B2026 again. I missed the route just after Crockham Hill primary school following the path to Frogham Lane – I retraced my steps and took the correct route but as it turns out either way involves a lot of steps up to the lane....

Walk this routeThis is a wonderful route that's a really enjoyable hike. There is one small part in Whitley Forest that takes a path through private land. I'd have given it five stars and verified it if it wasn't for that small section....

A pleasant, enjoyable and reasonably direct walk, with quite a bit of a variety once you escape the Oxted suburbs - from heath to wood, golf course to open fields. It offers good views of the North Downs a lot of the way but is practically always within earshot of traffic on the M25 or A25. The route is mostly well waymarked and easy to follow, but it would be difficult to wheel it due to gates and stiles and some narrow, muddy sections especially after rain....

This is a very enjoyable and moderately challenging walk with a couple of ‘watering holes’ along the way. The walk took us about three and half hours at a steady pace including a lunchtime picnic at Emmetts Gardens....
A quieter more country route from Westerham to Sevenoaks. Slower and slightly harder to navigate than WESSEV1 or WESSEV3, but more pleasant to walk. We walked from Westerham to Sevenoaks, using just the Inkatlas map....
