04 Apr 2025I'd walked and cycled a couple of times between Hoylake and West Kirby in the past, and on this occasion my reason for visiting was to walk to and from the Hilbre Islands. Due to tidal conditions, that had to be completed in the morning, leaving me free to have a look at the very short Slow Ways - Weshoy Two and Weshoy One - before going home.
This is a very short and very obvious route that simply connects the railway stations at Hoylake and West Kirby. My first steps were delayed by the level crossing barriers coming down, and they didn't go up until trains had passed in both directions. It's a busy line, but that's great because it also means that the access is splendid and once you've done the walk, there's no need to hang around long for a train. There's a shared tarmac footpath and cycleway running parallel to the railway line, but it seems to have a design fault. The signposts suggest that walkers should be in one lane and cyclists in another lane, but the rumble strips on the ground suggest the opposite. Regardless, everyone stuck to their lanes and I didn't notice anyone being inconvenienced. Almost anyone could walk or wheel this route, and I spotted walkers, cyclists and babies in pushchairs. When the tarmac path ends you continue along a road, but there is one short stretch where another footpath/cycleway drifts away from the road. If you don't have to catch a train urgently, it's well worth having a look around West Kirby, and the coast is only a few minutes walk from the station.

13 Mar 2022A very accessible, short, and mostly off-road route that is paved throughout. The long path along the golf course is a little narrow though and - as it is shared between pedestrians and cyclists - it can sometimes cause a little irritation between both parties when it is busy (as during our walk).

28 Sep 2021We walked this route from West Kirby to Hoylake on a cloudy but dry September day. The route is almost completely on tarmac or paved surfaces, with about half road walking and half along a tarmac path. There are very few obstacles so suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Not a very exciting walk though, very little to see along the way.

09 Jun 2021This route is recommended for all types of walking/wheelchair users on a tarmacadam footway; safe and easily accessible. The pathway adjacent to the rail line (on your left) opens out with the municipal golf course on the right. Emerging from the footpath at Hoylake is the wonderful Art Deco !930's railway station.

02 May 2021The route starts off on the road but there’s a footpath slightly set back from the road to start off with. After a section down a residential street you reach West Kirby football club. It was a little confusing about which way to go but look for the footpath sign on the left. After that it’s a nice tarmac path running alongside the train line all the way to Hoylake.
