10 Dec 2024It may be longer than the original, but it's a whole lot more entertaining and picturesque.
Eschewing the original's more direct route, using the footpath that runs alongside the railway, here we wander the streets of Hoylake, passing the old lighthouse, before heading out along a long residential road. At its end, past a barrier, we head onto the beach, a footpath running through the sand and gorse and garram south towards West Kirby.
It's a lovely walk: great views over the Dee to Wales and Hilbre, surrounded by nature. Eventually, we approach the end, and the sand becomes a little wetter, before we join the road at the slipway at the end of the beach. From here, it's a short walk to the station.
Rail and bus links at both ends, as is a healthy number of shops, bars and cafés.
Sand may make it a route not for everyone, but it's a lovely wander, especially on a sunny day.

05 Sep 2022This short route is significantly longer than WesHoy 1, but probably significantly more enjoyable and beautiful for a lot of people. It follows the coast from West Kirby to the western corner of the Wirral before heading along a straight road into Hoylake. There are short wiggles at each end to pass some interesting buildings. The long straight road may be boring to some, but there are a lot of very swanky houses to gawp at.
The highlight of the route is the coast between West Kirby and Hilbre Point. There is a bit of soft sand at the start and end, and also some firmer sand, but mostly it is firmer paths along the reed beds and marshes. This is a nature reserve with lots of birds and plants to look out for. The views across the Dee estuary to Hilbre Island and North Wales are beautiful and there is a lovely wild and windswept atmosphere here.
I tested this route at a high neap tide and the sea was nowhere near the route, but it is possible that at high spring tides, especially in adverse weather, some of this section could be under water, so check the tide-tables first.
