Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Porcovolente
19 Aug 2021We walked this route from Ware to Watton in August '21. Mostly it is footpaths and lanes through undulating countryside but with a couple of stretches of main road.
This route would not be suitable for pushchairs due to the quality of some of the paths. Mountain bikes would cope but some of the pathways are overgrown, with hidden holes. The paths either side of the A602 are particularly so with almost waist high nettles and thistles (I've included a photo, where it is hard to discern the path running through the centre of the image).
The route starts by running along Ware's main street where there are plenty of shops and cafes but then it follows the main road out of town. I don't know the area well enough but I think the route could be inproved by diverting down side roads from the first roundabout.
Once in the countryside the route is relatively easy to follow although we had to retrace steps a couple of times by being to eager to take turnings.
There were a couple of places where I had to really zoom in on the gpx file as even our OS map wasn't clear enough - I had a printout of the route over two A4 sheets but it was soon obvious that it wasn't providing enough information.
Halfway through the route the village of Chapmore End has a pub but apart from that there is nowhere to get food until Watton which has at least one shop and pub (the pub marked on the OS map at Stapleford has been converted into housing - this is where the other stretch of main road is).
Overall a pleasant enough walk with a variety of farmland, woodland and fallow ground, a few good views and no major obstacles.
The route ends in the village of Watton-At-Stone. We continued on about another half mile to the station which was easy to find and signposted from the village (not on the same line as Ware).
