Starts in sleepy village of Watton at Stone where there are a couple of pubs, a shop, cafe and railway station (Hertford line)....

Originally thought might be hard to find the path going past the garage in Walkern but it’s actually quite well signed and it’s literally on the right side of the garage....

Pretty views on the canal and at the church in Stapleford....

The route is clear throughout the walk, and the section nearer to Watton-at-Stone is really enjoyable. In Stevenage, the route is still clear but perhaps less enjoyable as much of it passes through residential suburban areas....

This was a lovely walk - along generally well marked footpaths. There was one road crossing outside Watton which was a bit busy. Beautiful Hertfordshire countryside....

Pleasant country walk including stretch of riverside and water meadows. A few sections of roadside walking along A119, paved verges all the way. Dry at time of walking....

Watton at stone is a charming village (pick up some local baked goods from the Budgens) Hedgerows, views of a stately house, countryside, a chalk river, tons of wildlife, and plenty of park benches. As of January 2023 the river beane has been restored to natural banks which I'm sure makes this even more lovely. Easy to navigate, mud in winter still manageable...

a bit long to get out of Stevenage but then you get to fantastic scenic farmland and woodlands all the way to Watton at stone. Road walking on only quiet roads. As there had been rain all week, there were puddles and mud, but all were traversible with minor detours through the wood...

Watton is a pretty village, the walk starts with roadside pavement walking until just past the station where it cuts into a field behind a hedge. The walk out of the village is along a verge/ field edge but it is quite a step up to get off the road onto the verge. There is a monotonous road for a short while before reaching nice paths alongside cycle paths, no road crossing, lots of underpasses and always slightly away from the traffic makes the pavement walking quite pleasant....

What a wonderful walk on a wintery day, should be even better in summer....

It wasn’t really possible to make out what was going on in the fields but it’s possible that this route could get muddy in places when not frozen....

I was really very pleased with this route - it's easy to follow, pleasant, no hills too steep, gorgeous countryside, varied and interesting, no nasty road crossings, etc....

The route starts by running along Ware's main street where there are plenty of shops and cafes but then it follows the main road out of town. Halfway through the route the village of Chapmore End has a pub but apart from that there is nowhere to get food until Watton which has at least one shop and pub (the pub marked on the OS map at Stapleford has been converted into housing - this is where the other stretch of main road is)....

There's an issue with access at the Oaklands end as the suggested path is not a right of way and through a private Scout camp....

Easy walking in beautiful countryside following the River Beane for much of the way. The river is a chalk stream, one of only 210 identified in the world (of which 160 are in England)....
