Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 May 2023I walked this route from Uckfield to Crowborough on a sunny day in the middle of May. The muddy paths are starting to dry out but there were still some soggy and cloggy patches along the way. In general I found this to be a well-drawn route which successfully deals with the issue of the strange diversion to walk along the A26 at the Crowborough end of UCKCRO 1. It was extremely quiet with some very pretty sections through typical High Weald countryside, but no real diverting sights as such. However the big house and church at Buxted Park are worth a look and just off the route. A minor diversion I didn't do this time. The paths head through a patchwork of small fields and woodland. The fields are mainly used for grazing or as hay meadows. There are few if any fields planted with crops.
Lots of stiles and footbridges along the route. Some of the paths appear to be little used. There appeared to be a small path re-route just to the west of Kiln Farm near High Hurstwood where I was walking exactly on the line of the path as shown by OS and SatNav but was brushing through overgrown holly bushes. At the end of the small section I found the stile onto the bridle path on the other side of a wire fence. So I must have missed the start of that section at the other end. (Walking from Crowborough it was well-signed so wouldn't be a problem).
I found myself using Sat Nav to confirm where I was several times on this route which generally means the waymarking could be improved on the ground.
There are two pubs and a small shop in Buxted but nothing else by way of facilities along the way. The whole walk took me about three and a half hours including a 20 minute stop to eat my packed lunch. I made no sight-seeing diversions. The two towns are connected by the 29 bus which runs hourly. Incidentally, the downloaded file for this route didn't open on the OS app for me. Is it .gpx format?.

19 Apr 2023I walked this route with Ingrina who has left a thorough review. I would emphasise that the going can be a little tough on this route, it was really muddy in parts.
I would also add that the start point in Crowborough is quite a walk from Crowborough station, around 1.5 miles mostly up hill so if planning the route by train this needs to be factored in.

28 Mar 2023For me, this route is around 2.5 stars, but have rounded it up to 3 to account for a more pleasant walking when it's drier.
This path is similar to Uckcro One, but it opts for the footpath towards Crowborough Common rather than the main road. The route is mostly on public footpaths and occasional road walking where you need to be aware of 2-way traffic. There are a few gates and stiles, and the paths can be narrow and very muddy in places, so it is not wheelchair or pram friendly.
In general, it seems to be the best way to connect the 2 places on foot, but doesn't offer much for views. But it is good for anyone who loves a muddy walk and some wild garlic en route!
Things to watch out for:
- Muddy when it has been a wet season. There were some places where it helped to use the fence for support. Good boots will go a long walk for trudging through the mud.
- Where the path joins some country roads, there is no segregation for pedestrians, so be mindful of vehicular traffic.
- There is a small part where you will be brushing gorse prickles and brambles on the path. The gorse is OK for trousers, but keep your eye out for brambles that might catch.

09 Sep 2023NB: download file probably OK. I now realise the functionality to upload routes on the OS app is now only available to subscribers.
