Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Twyford to Wokingham (Twywok 1) review.

A pleasant Slow Way which follows (more or less) the River Loddon.

There is a half mile street walk out of Twyford. A turning on the left leads into the Lodden Nature Reserve.

The footpath through the reserve is rough in places. It was dry on this occasion, but on a previous visit I found it can be very muddy. The route ends at Whistley Mill Lane. The ‘Heron on the Ford’ pub is a short detour to the west (use the bridge and cross a field to a second bridge, as the lane itself fords the river!)

The Slow Way soon leaves the lane at a footpath which follows the River Loddon (Photo 1). This ends at a path along the north edge of Dinton Pastures Country Park. The route from there actually skirts around the park, although it is only a short detour to visit the café (dintoncafes.com) beside the main lake.

Unfortunately, the rest of the walk into Wokingham is pavement waking along suburban streets and a stretch of the busy Reading Road.

Despite the disappointed final section into Wokingham, I did enjoy walking this stretch of the River Lodden.

This route has a long unappealing stretch from Wokingham station up to Winnersh and across a motorway which leads right next to busy Reading Road and then Robin Hood Lane. If it is possible I'd recommend starting the journey from Winnersh. Once the route branches off to Dinton Pastures, it is more secluded and enjoyable. There are not many complicated turns in the second half of the route to Twyford but an electronic geolocation is very useful. Footpaths beyond the Dinton Pastures park along the river Loddon can be muddy and there was one fallen tree across the path close to Twyford. The route is otherwise accurate and I guess there won't be a better alternative given the road infrastructure between the two towns.
