Description
Much like Topott1 but between Tipton St John and Ottery stays mainly on the west bank, Access to the river to and from Ottery centre uses the pavement alongside the B3174. Whilst this is a busy road, the pavement is wide and safe and you dont have to cross the road nor negotiate the sloping bank under the road bridge. This route does not take advantage of the opportunity for a refreshment stop in Woodbury, although this is of course a matter of choice. There is a pub at Tipton

25 Jun 2024LOVED this route, especially the views across Pebblebed Heath towards the Otter. If you have a choice, I'd walk from Topsham to Ottery so you can enjoy those views.
I also loved walking along the river.

25 Jun 2024Really loved walking this route, especially the Pebblebed Heaths National Nature Reserve. The heathland is beautiful and gives a wide sweeping view across the Otter Valley which, when we walked it, was ferociously green and lush.
The route goes close to Woodbury Castle, the remains of an old large Iron Age fort that is some 2,500+ years old.
The western end of the route has some quiet lanes, but they all felt good to walk.
The route could be better drawn by the Otter (just follow the river staying on the western side), by the Woodbury allotments (the path runs alongside the western edge of the allotments) and also at Darts Farm Business Park (follow the cycle path to the west of the pedestrian crossing), but is easy enough to follow in these places. If someone wishes to redraw the route I'll transfer this review.
I actually combined this route with walking from Exeter to Topsham in order to get to Ottery St Mary. If you want to walk from Exeter to Ottery I'd go this way. It's longer, but a much much much better walk.
I'd 100% walk this route again!.

24 Oct 2023A very enjoyable walk. The section along the appropriately named "Watery Lane" was under water (late-October) after heavy rain, but passable if prepared to get your feet wet. If not there is a minor road passing Higher Bagmores Farm and Shepherds park farm between Bagmores SX 99204 88014 and Woodbury SY 01033 87350 . Do not use the busy and fast Woodbury Road. This alternate lane was quiet and safe when I walked it. This apartit is a fine route with a great walk over Woodbury Common.
