Description
The sections of this route going into/out of both Tonyrefail and Porth are the same as for TONPOR2, but the middle section takes a more direct and more easy to follow route. If walking Porth to Tonyrefail, having walked uphill through Cymmer you leave the road just before the Trebanog roadsign and Chinese takeaway (picture 1); go slightly left and take the path toward the green fencing surrounding a substation (picture 2). There are a number of small paths on the hillside but the route follows the most prominent one - keep heading upwards until you see the cairn (pictures 3 and 4) - take a right at the next T-junction of paths so the cairn is to your left and walk between the cairn and the housing estate. Cross directly over the farm road - the path follows the fence and you will then soon turn left onto a well-marked path into Tonyrefail

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Feb 2025February 2025. Direction: Tonyrefail to Porth.
Failed miserably on Tonpor2 a couple of years ago. Tonpor3 was much better. The start of the path over the mountain after leaving the road is clearly marked, but after that you just need to follow the map as there are several possible routes around the Trebanog housing estate area.
Photo 1 - The sign after leaving the mountain road
Photo 2 - The view down to Cymmer and Porth from the mountain
Photo 3 - The substation where the mountain path emerges at the top end of Cymmer.
