In the area between Llantrisant, Tonyrefail and Beddau, there are quite a few footpaths that are either formally closed, peter out into blocked access or overgrown stretches or locked gates. The specific access issues on this route are:-....

The footpath leading from the lane crossing Llantrisant common takes a sharp right hand turn just before Llwynau Farm. After crossing the bridge over Nant Muchudd near Treferig Isha Farm, the path goes through a lovely stretch of woodland next to the Muchudd stream. Walk this routeFirstly, the path from the road across the common starts out well enough with a track and a sign for the Penrhys Pilgrimage Way route, but it`s a dead end. There looks to be a better route following the Penrhys Pilgrimage Way all the way from Llantrisant to the edge of Tonyrefail (with hindsight, it looks like the sign on Llantrisant Common, mentioned above, had been turned around !)....

Just after Tre-Boeth Farm at the end of the second field, the path seems to disappear. There`s a nice green lane after Tyla Winder Farm, which winds around to another farm or establishment not shown on the map. Apart from the above, it was a pleasant walk, finishing off down the winding rural lane (Gelliwion Road) into Ponty....

The names of the farms didn`t tie up with anything on my OS map, so in the end I gave up and took a footpath across the moor leading into Trebanos, then down the main road into Porth, which is not an acceptable alternative route....

After the initial road walk out of Talbot Green, the path follows national cycle route 4 up the Ely Valley as far as Coedely / Thomastown....

It`s a long hall up Amos Hill and Mountain road from Penycraig and then a long walk through the long street of Edmondstown, but the reward is a lovely walk through the meadows and oak tree copses leading down into Tonyrefail....

Walk this routeI recommend using TONPOR2 as an alternative - it's the same as TONPOR1 except that it turns off the main road higher up....

The left turn off the main road through Cymmer is beside the Trebanog roadsign/Chinese takeaway; go slightly left to find the path - look for the green railings (see pictures)....

The first part of this walk was lovely, although I would recommend taking the right turn after leaving Mill Street in Tonyrefail rather than going straight ahead, and following the path to link up with the suggested route....

Although most of this route is fine, the footpath route just outside Pencoed is no longer in use, plus it involves a very hazardous crossing of the A473. It also includes a non-existent route between Thomastown and Tonyrefail. See Penton2....

This is a good route with varied scenery: flat around Pencoed and hilly north of Brynna. It’s easy to navigate along well-marked paths and tracks, but there were a couple of waterlogged sections on the track between Brynna and Tonyrefail....

Walking from Tonyrefail, there’s an automatic gate at the entrance to Glyn Farm; if it doesn’t open, there’s a stile and a permissive path sign....
