15 Jun 2024I walked from Tiverton to Cullompton and apart from one field with cows, enjoyed it. The canal section is nice, and made quite a change for me. I didn't see any canal traffic, but there was plenty of wildlife. After the canal section the route climbs, mostly along lanes and you see rolling green Devon countryside all around.
The only problem I had was with a field approaching Leonard Farm. The farmer has placed an electric fence across the path. There is no crossing point, or even a warning that the fence is electric. I found out when I got a shock from it. I got across the fence ok, (I just stepped on it) but immediately we entered the field the whole herd of cows ran over from the opposite side. So I headed for the field edge, and went back over the fence. Trouble is the fence is right at the edge of the field, so I had to push through brambles and nettles, while trying not to fall in the ditch, all while the cows were challenging us. That's why I got shocked. The cows learned a few swear words today. I had my dog with me, and perhaps the cows wouldn't have been a problem had I been on my own. The gate to get out is hard to open as well, just what you don't need when being chased.
This section can be avoided by sticking to the lane, and were I to walk this again, I would take that option if I saw cows in the field. In an earlier field we walked past cows that ignored us completely. You just never know what you're going to get.
Don't let my moaning about the cows put you off, this is overall a good walk.

28 Aug 2023A walk of two halves. The first part (if coming from Tiverton) is along the canal and totally flat. The rest is a mixture of quiet country lanes and field paths. There is a gentle climb to the top of Sock Hill which offers views towards the Blackdown Hills and the Sidmouth gap followed by a short steepish descent (or ascent if coming from Cullompton). This does mean it has more road walking than TivCul Two however.
The canal basin is also a valid start/end point for the walk with toilets, car parking a visitor center and a cafe.

04 May 2021An enjoyable walk particularly in dry conditions. In winter or after heavy rain, deep muddy conditions can be experienced particularly at farm gates.
