Choosing a good route between Thornaby and Middlesbrough is tricky due to several main roads and railway lines. A more direct route is possible but this route better balances quieter roads and a lovely river walk. The route crosses the Infinity Bridge to use the north side of the River Tees - however there is now a permissive footpath along the south side from the Infinity Bridge to the Tees Newport Bridge, so you can now opt for the south side.

I walked from Thornaby to Middlesbrough and used the path on the north side of the river. (This path is shared with STOMID, so worth reading my review of that route for more detailed information).

The route follows quiet residential streets for the first couple of miles (pics 1-4). You then approach the A66 road junctions which are little tricky to navigate (pic 5). I found the east side of the road easiest to cross safely. After the second roundabout, follow the busy slip road (Pic 6) down to George Street and cross as soon as you can (pic 7). Then follow the road back round to your left (pic 8). Follow the road over the railway bridge, use the pedestrian crossing to cross Mandale Road and then head down the footpath off the main road (pic 9).
From this point onwards the route was easy to follow and Infinity bridge was an impressive way to cross the river (pic 10). On the north side of the river, follow the well marked path which closely follows the river bank apart from one section around the Tees Barrage white-water rapids (pic 11). The river path is well made up along its whole length (pic 12). Cross the river at the Tees Newport Bridge (pic 13) using the ramp on the north east side or steps on the south west. The route then follows the quiet Cannon Street before joining the busier Newport Road to take you into Middlesbrough town centre.
The middle section of this walk along the river is the highlight, with road sections before and after being a little uninspiring. Overall a good walk and a safe way to travel between the two towns.
The route is well suited to wheeled users especially along the river section.
