Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A very pleasant and easy to follow route. I walked it midweek and there were few cyclists on the shared Sustrans27 route - which it is for much of its length. A nice exit and access to Tavistock town centre using the canal the park and a beautiful riverside path.

We also walked this route from Yelverton to Tavistock. It is a really pleasant walk, almost all on tarmac surfaces with dropped curbs at crossing points. You are mostly following Drake's Trail, but the easiest way to navigate is to follow the blue 'Route 27' signs, which are plentiful, unlike those for Drake's Trail. The map for this route indicates veering off this route near to Yelverton, but we couldn't see the advantage of doing this, and it wasn't obvious where to leave and rejoin the main route. On arrival in Tavistock, the route is only briefly by the main road, then taking you round the back of the College, beside a stream and finally through a park to reach the town centre. As Lara has mentioned, there is a tunnel which is quite long, dark, rather damp and a bit uneven underfoot. I would also recommend a torch. You can see light from the entrance though. We really enjoyed this walk.

I walked this route in reverse starting in Yelveton and walking to Tavistock. This way around was flat or downhill mostly and certainly has more inclines the other way around.

It was a great route following the cycle path, pretty much all of road on smooth tarmac surfaces. Lots of the route is through wooded areas which are beautiful and sheltered. There were a few wide bridges to cross and the tunnel was pretty dark inside with only minimal lighting. If you were walking during the winter months I would advise a torch might be useful for this part.

Both Tavistock and Yelveton have amenities such as public toilets, cafes, shops etc but there is not much in the middle of the route.

A great way to walk in between two places!.

This route follows the National Cycle Trail from Tavistock to Yelverton. It is almost entirely on tarmac and is regularly used by cyclists and walkers alike. I'm going to suggest an alteration to the start because of an unnecessary detour around the college.
